Iskrax Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 How was yours blue belt grading? Was it hard? How long did it take you to get to the blue belt? I been doing karate for year (grading in 2 weeks to 8 KYU). My target and dream is to get to the 5 KYU (Blue belt) after that I want to try to go to the BJJ. I know it takes time but I'm working hard to get it .
mal103 Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 We don't have blue but 8th Kyu is red for us, there is a slight shift in gear, normally increasing the number of techniques done in the line and Kumite. It is also the time when you are expected to show an increase in speed and power, can't really say what is required as each club is different, you should talk to your instructors to find out what you need and if you are at the level needed. Now as for aiming for 5th kyu and swapping MA - why?I am doing some bjj training this weekend but to compliment my Karate, there is a lot of cross over with styles later on, especially when you identify lots of wrist locks in Kata applications, a lot are identified as bjj or Judo etc but there are only so many ways of locking and throwing, you will learn them if you are in a good school/dojo or have a good instructor.Swapping styles is like doing half an apprenticeship as a builder and then changing to plumbing where the end goal should be in becoming a master builder who will have both skills included in their armoury. You would be better getting your Black belt and then training for at least another 18 months before looking at other MA.
wildbourgman Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 I agree with mal103, there are plenty of techniques in karate that can fill the gap that people feel they need to go to BJJ for. I know alot of sport karate styles have deemphasized these techniques but they are available. WildBourgMan
Zaine Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 Blue belt was 8th kyu for me. 5th was green with one stripe. I don't remember it being particularly difficult but I practiced as much as I could, especially when it came down to testing time. When you say that you want to go to BJJ, do you mean that you want to leave Fudokan completely? Martial arts training is 30% classroom training, 70% solo training.https://www.instagram.com/nordic_karate/

I know it takes time but I'm working hard to get it .Well, my blue belt, (Gokyu), seemed so long ago, and that's because it was a long time ago. I can remember that it wasn't anything unique and/or special. It was hard, but, to me ALL testing cycles were hard. I began Shindokan, in October, when I was 7 years old, and I finally passed my Gokyu when I was 10 years old, in June of 1968, almost 11 years old; so it took me nearly 4 years. Of course, how long it takes to reach said rank isn't as important as the training itself. **Proof is on the floor!!!
Kanku65 Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 My opinion is that, it should take you at least 2 years to reach 5 Kyu if you have no prior experience in martial arts. It's important that you are not just going through the motions, but that you know your kata well enough to advance to the next. To search for the old is to understand the new.The old, the new, this is a matter of time.In all things man must have a clear mind. The Way: Who will pass it on straight and well?- Master Funakoshi
Nidan Melbourne Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 Blue belt at my school is sankyu and will normally take 2 - 2.5 years to attain. Why is your target only blue belt? Or is it just a stepping stone goal? Don't stop your karate training when you start your bjj training. Because both compliment each other very well. Because you need both skill sets (stand up and ground work). The Bjj ranks will take longer to progress through but will help your karate big time. Especially with transitioning and timing
Iskrax Posted May 26, 2014 Author Posted May 26, 2014 Well I dont know what will happen in future because I dont know what will happen in next training. It's so silly going with yours '''surenders'' (white belt) and seeing guys who wear brown belt and not working hard like I'm. My school has 2 gradings/ per year. So if you pass all yours gradings and you work hard you can get 5th KYU (Blue belt) in 2.5 years. I will be 18 when I get blue belt . My instructor is freakin good. He always hits me hard and pushes me to the limit. Sometimes I hate him but I know he does his job pretty well.
