Taking money from Sensei?

Recommended Posts

I pay my students for any work they do.

1. They are not my slaves. Their time is as valuable as mine and they deserve to be paid as much as I do.

2. In some states, it's illegal not to do so.

3. I don't like to barter because often times the services traded to not have equal monetary value. IE...graphics design can be quite pricey. It's not fair to give them a few months at a discount, which may be much less valuable.

4. I feel it's the professional way to handle things.

I agree. Even Sensei/Shihan/etc are simply people too.

You pay them for their expertise, and they wish to pay you for your expertise.

Sounds completely fair to me.

He trained for years to gain knowledge you are willing to pay for.

Now he is willing to pay for knowledge you have spent years training to gain.

He is willing to pay- he's not the issue- I am.

And it's not that much an issue. I wouldn't charge a good friend for help with their site unless it was extensive or they were standing to make a large sum.

Again, this is a very sensitive area that I'd tread quite carefully for everyone involved. All in all, I'd sit down and speak candidly and frank about it, and reach an agreement. Speaking about everything together concerning what might or might not happen.

Therefore...

You pay them for their expertise, and they wish to pay you for your expertise.

Solid post!!

Neither of you are unreasonable, so, working out the logistics is doable.

Perhaps you can suggest some private lessons as a form of payment.

I say private lessons because then you guys will strengthen your bond and have a better understanding of one another.

It begins with the knowledge that the severity of a strikes impact is amplified by a smaller surface area.
