wildbourgman Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 I have another way to think about kids ranks and ranks in general. I'm a beginner in Shorin Ryu and I'm going to a small Shorin RYu Federation tournament soon, I hold a 1st Kyu in Shotokan that I quit actively practicing when I was 16 years old. I'm 41 now. Well I started relearning and practicing my beginnner Shotokan katas and I'm going to perform two of them in the tournament. I'm also going to take part in kumite. Under what level should I enter the tournament? Beginner, Intermediate or advanced?Physically I'm not advanced in anything except age, but I'm not truely a beginner or intermediate. I don't care about winning or losing, but I don't want to look stupid. My plan was to try to talk to the tournament director and let him decide what would be fair I just want to have fun. Any thoughts? WildBourgMan

Any thoughts?I think the best way is to speak to the director as you said. If you spar with beginners and intermediate, it will be unfair for them as you are advanced but at the same time if you spar with advanced you won't be at the same level as you mentioned and this will be unfair for you, bit of problem I am not sure what the director will say but anyway keep us updated with the director's decision and best of luck in the tournament "The Martial Arts begin with a point and end in a circle." Any thoughts?Personally I would enter as a beginner. I started training again after 23 years. I left when I was 12 and 5th Kyu, so not quite the same stage you were at. But it's amazing what you forget about it. You really don't want to feel out of your depth and be disheartened from carrying on with your training. So my choice would be go in as a beginner and if all goes well enter the next one as an intermediate. This way it will give you a better idea of where you sit in it all. Good luck with the competition however you decide to enter. M. Be water, my friend.
sensei8 Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Well, you ARE still an advanced kyu; no matter how long you've been not actively learning/training. You might be rusty, but in time, that rust will not be a factor. Now, for tournament sakes, most tournaments want to know how long you've been training. Rank is a concern, but the reason for asking how long you've been training is give them a better understanding. Because, one Ikkyu isn't the same as another Ikkyu for many reasons. Therefore, tell said tournament that you're advanced AND tell them it's been X many years since you've actively trained. Then, they'll place you in a division that's appropriate as far as they're concerned. Now, for learning/training sakes. Restart as a Jukyu/Beginner, and then the CI will determine your current rank for the time being.Hang in there!! You'll be fine. **Proof is on the floor!!!
