Do-gi Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 Hi everyone! After much deliberation, I've recently purchased a new karate gi. It's my first 100% cotton one, and the brand is CORE. Great reviews, should all be fine. However, I received it today, and it's really big. The pants are fine, but the jacket reaches almost all the way down to my knees. So, I"m trying to decide whether I should return it, or try and shrink it in the dryer? A really hot wash, followed by a hot spin in the dryer? You see, I'm about 165 cm. That's a really annoying height, because the gi's come in 160, and 170. So I really could use some advice; what do you all think?Do-gi.P.S By the way, hi, this is my first post!
Hawkmoon Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 Looking at one site for that 'suit', the jacket being past you knees would be its expected look !Its cut that way!Is the suit you brought called 'esteem'?If so it is cut 'long' so should go past your knees!Maybe look at the suit called 'Veracity', its seems to be a shorter cut!http://www.bushido.co.nz/Click shop then karate uniform!Check with your club/dojo see what they have to say about this, the suit is the uniform of any martial Artist and maybe this is the look your dojo/club desires!! “A human life gains luster and strength only when it is polished and tempered.”Sosai Masutatsu Oyama (1923 - 1994) Founder of Kyokushin Karate.
JohnASE Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 Shrinking a gi can be a gamble. It depends on the brand and sometimes on the model. Material can be preshrunk to varying degrees. I'm not familiar with your Core. I recommend that you speak with your vendor. Generally, after you try to shrink a gi, you can't exchange it.I just spoke with someone today who bought a gi and was unable to shrink it. The jacket was big, but the pants were okay, so he washed and dried the jacket multiple times, but it didn't change much. He's going to come in and try other sizes and maybe other models.P.S. Nidan Melbourne Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 Like what JohnASE said it is a gamble when trying to shrink your gi. If you try and do it yourself it could turn out badly. So speak to the vendor about it. You never know they might be more than happy to exchange the jacket for you.
Hawkmoon Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 opps yup sorry should have answered the question.Don't shrink it! “A human life gains luster and strength only when it is polished and tempered.”Sosai Masutatsu Oyama (1923 - 1994) Founder of Kyokushin Karate.
Do-gi Posted March 7, 2014 Author Posted March 7, 2014 Thanks guys for your replies.I returned the gi for a smaller size. It came and it fit, just. Pants were a little too restrictive, but I though I'd just have to get used to that. I wore it, then washed it. Cold water, no dryer...it was a disaster. It is now so small it could fit my 10 yr old brother. Darn, darn, darn! I've given the gi to a friend who fits it and I've ordered the larger size. I'm going to try and carefully shrink it. What else am I supposed to do?Sighs. Anyone know what to do with all these gi's I've bought and don't fit? Do-gi.
Canadian77 Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 Arrg. How frustrating. Sounds like a Homer Simpson "Doh!-gi" situation...lol. I hope the bigger one shrinks properly for you. I've been lucky with fit so far. Hopefully the bigger one shrinks as much as the other one did, so it fits you well!

It's crazy how comfortable it is to have this done.As for all of those extra gis you can donate them to your school so that they could use them for students who can't afford one. Do-gi.Try this Gi, http://www.blitzsport.com/Adult-White-Diamond-Karate-Suit?sc=8&category=2253622 they go up in half sizes so you can get a 165 no problem they do shrink but the shrinkage is factored in in the size. Blitzsport deliver worldwide but I don't know the costs but there should be a page telling all this on the site somewhere. I have this Gi and love it. For the price it's high quality and has that satisfying 'snap' we all love.M. Be water, my friend.
sensei8 Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 If the gi doesn't meet with your expectations, return it and request one that does. **Proof is on the floor!!!
