I have been a brown belt for a month; on paper I'm an advanced grade but I have worn my white gi with the Kohai of the club, I never thought of myself as an advanced practitioner in our club until tonight. My Sensei presented me with my Black Gi. He did no song and dance about it; he didn't call me in front of the club or anything like that. At the end of my session, he just bowed to me and gave me my new Gi. I can't wait until next week.

Look to the far mountain and see all.

Congratulations! All of the senior grades (brown belts and up) are allowed to wear a black gi at my dojo, but it isn't considered a significant thing. I think it's neat, though! When I trained in iaijutsu, there were no belt ranks, so they judged rank by the uniform--first you earned the hakama, then the indigo keikogi, then the right to wear a wakizashi. It definitely has a way of making you feel special.

Now that I think of it, I should probably switch to a black gi--my white ones always end up looking dingy and gross from sweat and blood :P

Awesome! Congrats! My school started out in black gis for whatever reason. I guess it's just what my instructor preferred. When we got to black belt we were allowed to wear blue pants.

We have to wait until black belt to wear a black gi. :-(

Personally, I'm glad to see that this practice is STILL being done today. It meant a lot back then, and it seems that it still means a lot today!!
