What do you like about your style ?

For me - it was more the teacher than the style. Aside from my teacher - the Jook Lum Mantis style that I practice - one can take it into their old age. And I've made friends with other Southern Mantis people from around the world - Australia - China - England........

The simple and honest approach to training and so to combat!

We all think the same way, we work the same way, we push, we support, we strive to get the best out of each other.

Honest hard work!

Funakoshi Sensei made Shotokan simple, yet deadly.

In the early days it had an emphasis on 'One punch kill' now known today as 'One punch knockout'

Also, he was a humble man. It is said he like to 'take long walks in forests' which is something I do, alone.

I love my teacher but what I like about this school is that they don't just teach one thing. You train in Karate for three months and then Jiu-Jitsu for three months. They also offer Judo, Tai Chi and weapons. It makes for a very well balanced training. I also take the cardio kickboxing.

I originally chose shotokan karate because it was the only option I knew of in my area.

I've grown pretty attached to it. I just enjoy it more than anything else, it really calms me down and helps me manage my stress.

in terms of the kata, I like the explosive, sharp movements and deep stances

The biggest downside for me is the limitations in the competitive sparring associated with it. I don't think I should have to pull a full hikite or kiai to score a point, and I also think the ban on hook punches and low kicks is a little unneccessary (I have no problem keeping these safe).
