koreantiger81 Posted September 30, 2002 Posted September 30, 2002 I practice martial arts on a frequent basis.(4-6 times a week) Every 2 months, I hyper-extend my knee...sigh... I usually hyper-extend it when doing a tornado kick or a 540 kick...Anyway, do you know of any exercises to strengthen the ligaments in the knee? Kinesiologist/TrainerBlack-Belt
G95champ Posted September 30, 2002 Posted September 30, 2002 Fist thing is first when you throw kicks into the air never thow them at full force or you will keep hurting them. The same is true with your elbows and punching. As far as how to help build them. Its not a realy easy answer. Because if you have weak knees many of the lifts that will help can hurt more than they help. Leg Extintons is the obcious one. I would say lunges and step ups could not hurt. Best advice may be swimming or ridding a bike. (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."
Bretty101 Posted October 1, 2002 Posted October 1, 2002 I used to have trouble with my knees which i'd describe as being 'loose', hence easily strained and hyperextended. I've found cycling and basic weight movements have helped a lot (ie leg extension machine work, squats and deadlifts). The worst thing i ever did for my knees was jogging Why instructors still use jogging as a warm up is beyond me? On a more practical note jumping rope is a great way to strengthen the legs, makes you nice a light on your feet and fits in your training bag nicely. Bretty
