Sai, the Kobudo weapon of choice.

I used to own a pair of Sai. I was never taught any kata for them. This week I met a Kobudo sensei who is willing to teach me 3 sai kobudo kata. I'm over the moon! Does anyone else practice this iconic weapon?

Hi again Harkon

I can't say I've ever trained for the sai, but one of the Shotokan katas is also a kata for sai. It's called Jion, if you have the kata as well (or any others that consider Sai) in Shukokai, consider learning the sai application of them.

I learned the sai via the Ananku kata. We learned it first unarmed and then couple ranks later with the sai with basic sai training in between. It's a fun weapon that seems simple but has so many applications that it takes times to really grasp how practical it is.

As example, I was starting to branch out into Mantis and my instructor asked me to bring every weapon I had. When he saw the sai he asked if I would show him a kata so I showed him Ananku which involves hitting someone with the end of the handle. He had never thought about that application before so we drilled it the entire class.

I've sent for a new pair of Sai today, with case £40, not bad. I can't wait to receive them. My Kata with them might appear in our Martial Arts Exhibition here in North Wales in March next year.

Within the Shindokan Kobudo syllabus, the Sai is one of our many weapons. It's a fun one, but it can pay havoc on a beginners wrists.

Master the weapon and don't let the weapon master you.

Have fun with it...just respect it first!!

:)
