hip pain

aes

Recommended Posts

I am relatively new to my Karate training (Shorin-Ryu) at 6 weeks, but am approaching my first belt colour milestone.

Up until now the pain I have suffered has been purely from the conditioning and a bit of strain on the tendons on the top of my feet due to the running bare foot.

But now I am learing Kihon Gary (front push kick, side kick, back kick and round house) the basic kick semi-kata. I am finding my hips are killing me. After a session at the dojo I can barely walk due to the pain. The pain goes away in several hours until I try to practice my kicks again. I know my flexibility could be better and my technique could be too, but this much pain from it? I am no pain wimp either. No history of joint problems as well.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Thanks

cant say that i had a problem like that but i do have a ligament problem in my knee. I give it rest and relexation. Maybe thats what you should do. If you still want to go to class, just take it easy dont go hard. And very important..talk to you instructor and/or doctor.

It really depends on where you feel the pain...inner hip, outer hip, muscle soreness or the joint itself. It always helps to see a doctor...y'know, one of those guys who wears a white coat and went to college and knows how to fix you up!

Are you able to stretch properly before working out? If so then try to get a stretch in after your done with your workout. Also check on your hip alignment when practicing your kicks, sometimes you can feel if your hips are aligned when kicking. Otherwise, consult with your instuctor or doctor to make sure it isn't something wrong with your hip joints

Well I have talked to Kyoshi and he does not seem to be too worried about it. I thought about going to the doc but there are too few of them in this town so will wait and see.

The pain seems to be on deep on the inner hips and ratiates inward. Goes away if I don't kick, but gee I have to perfect this stuff before my stripe test. Likely give them a break will be best.

Tonight was a good training night. I didn't have to do as many kicks and instead was doing some more advanced training in Goshin-juitsu (sp). Which gave them a rest. Next training day is Sat morning so the 3 day break might help.

Thanks

IMO its just where you are not used to using those muscles in that way. It will or should pass with time.

Karate training can certainly let you know about muscles you didn't think you had, as the muscles you use tend to be those that aren't used all that often in regular life, the same way as used when training.

Certainly it could be that... HOWEVER... nobody here in this forum knows how YOU feel.... we can only imagine. We are not you. Only you know exactly what the pain is like.

I don't believe it's good advice for anyone here, who hasn't seen you and who isn't properly qualified (ie. medically) to say it will simply go away!

While it might simply be your body getting used to karate, it might be a medical condition and you should certainly get it checked out asap if it's causing excrutiating pain that almost stops you from walking!

I hate to think of all the injuries people put up with or develop because they think it might just go away. Look after your body and PLEASE go and get it checked out immediately. Better to ask the Doc, Osteopath or Chiro their professional opinion than to be injured permanently.

Hope this helps!

I have experience with hip pain, and it may or may not be what you're experiencing, so I'll just tell:

About 2 years ago, every time I would stretch or kick, I would feel this pain in my inner hip joints. Eventually, I would have to "pop" my hips and it would feel much better. I went to see a physical therapist, and here it turns out my hips were actually dislocating themselves! See, I'm very flexible (as in stretch between two chairs and go hyper-split) because my ligaments are very loose. So, I would go into a split, and then my hips would just kind of fall out of joint and I could go further. Dislocations tend to be pretty painful! Although as far as they go, this wasn't too bad. The rubbing back and forth was going to cause damage in the long run, however, so I hard to start pumping iron. I lifted weights to build muscle to keep my joints together. Muscles doing the ligaments' job so I would have muscle flexibility and not joints popping out everywhere. I'm not quite as flexible as I used to be, but it doesn't matter. I'm in much less pain (even though I still have to pop the hips back in place sometimes) and lifting weights has given me added power...definitely worth it.

If this sounds like what you're experiencing, you really need to check it out. There's some technical term for it but I don't remember.

Thank you for all the tips. I think I will try to see the doctor, after all I can't live on Advil and Tylenol.

I just demonstrated a low intensity kick to a co-worker that was into Karate and now I can barely walk again. It will go away in about 20 mins, but I know something is wrong.

Thanks

btw I procratinated going to the doc and the hip pain has passed. Had a wicked kicking training session on Monday and expected it to come back but nothing other than the usual sore muscles.

I feel a bit of soreness when I press on some of the deep tendons near the joint and likely had just badly streatched some of thes and the pain was radiating into the joint.

Not that I would recommend not going to the doc like myself but just wanted to let people know that it has gone away. :-)
