When ever I hit my punchbag with a round house kick, my foot always sting after I have kicked it. Why does this happen. I know it is not the sort of pain you can just be hard about and continue because it really stings rather than hurts where you hit it to hard. It is my technique or the fact that my punch bag is leather. What should I do to combat this problem.

Thanks a lot in advance

keep kicking your bag, until you build a callus, then your foot will sting no more. I train with a 100lb hard canvas bag, and when I kick it with extreme force, there is no sting. This is because my feet are conditioned and hardened. Thus the usual sting that would be present upon kicking a bag with such force, is not there. The same is true for all types of materials...I have kicked them all. Your feet just need conditoning. :karate:

It will go away some with time. However you may want to look into wearing long pants. I dont suggest pads but joggin pants or something may give you a bit more protection. Prehaps wear some high socks and MA shoes. This is not a serious pain. Its about the same as someone slapping you on the back. It burns but its not going to kill you. Tuff it out and with time it will not be as bad.

try striking more with your shin, at the transition where your shin meets your instep. It sound like your getting a slap where the large area of your instep (top of your foot) is striking the bag.

Also if you use your shin you should get a much more powerful and solid strike though it will feel odd at first. (or buy some foot pads)

Yeah I noticed that I was slapping with my feet, not because my feet were not conditioned it was due to inproper technique. When I kicked it with my instep (where shin meets foot) it stopped slapping. I also know its not conditioning as I can hit materials such as a stack of bamboo sticks and I dont feel much pain.

Thanks bretty :)

I use the ball of the foot. You could try that and see how it feels. Though if that isn't how your art does it I'm sure there's a reason for it. Tomato tomahto.
