Apps

Does anyone use any good apps (Android or iOS) as part of their training?

Here's a few of the ones I use:

MapMyRun

- Uses your phone's gps to track your route and speed and gives you data on your average speed, distance, calories burnt etc. Can run other people's routes and "race" them and can share sessions via Facebook. Will also connect with equipment like heart rate monitors or sensor that monitors how many strides you're taking.

Android

iOS

Fitness Buddy

- Large catalogue of exercises divided into muscle groups with video and pictures to explain them. Also pre-programmed workouts for you to follow. Pretty good app for when you want some inspiration for your workout.

Android

iOS

HIIT Interval Timer

- Really basic version of a timer which I use for timing rounds and for interval training. Use this one because the timer is massive and I don't need it right in front of my face when training to see it. Also counts down the last 5 secs of each round for you

Android

iOS - can't find it in the iTunes store

Anyone got any other good ones?

  • 3 months later...

I use JEFIT (paid and got the pro). Works well on my android tablet, I believe there is an ios version as well. Good range of exercises on file. I like it as it keeps track of my progress. I created my own routines and start at 3 sets of 8 reps and work towards 3 sets of 10. Once I can do that, I increase the weight and start at 3 of 8 again and continue to work up repeating the cycle. The problem i had previously was trying to keep track of my progress (number of reps, weight, etc). This does all this for me and gives me what my previous workout results were so I can benchmark against it and ensure I'm making gains.

My brother signed up to run a half marathon this year, and told me about an app that trains for it, called c25k. Gives a workout plan to follow that supposedly doesn't kill you. He wanted me to give it a try, but that isn't likely to happen.

C25k is a fantastic program that helps those who do not run acclimate in an attempt to make it more enjoyable because you're not just thrusting your body into regular physical activity.

I haven't entertained the idea of Cyber Training, never thought about it really. Maybe I'm a bit old fashioned. Having a mobile phone in case of an emergency is something I do when I'm running; but being GPS tracked is beyond me I'm afraid. Maybe I need a push into the 21st century.

Look to the far mountain and see all.

I actually kinda like it in the sense that I get a full set of stats when I've completed my run. Things like elevation climbed and average pace and average speed and an exact distance. Its also handy on whole social network side of things as you can challenge and motivate your friends to go out too.

One I've been really wanting to try out is Zombies, Run! :D

That looks awesome. Not only does it add someone to running experience but, by running, you earn things that add components an additional game!
