chrisw08 Posted August 9, 2012 Posted August 9, 2012 The katas I know are fuku gata itche, Ni, Son and I was curious when I practice I normaly go through each one ten times so 30 fuku gatas. I was wondering everytime you do the kata how many calories you burn and how many calories should I be eating the days I do it 30 times so any help on that? I do them medium speed but with full force.
darksoul Posted August 9, 2012 Posted August 9, 2012 All depends on the effort you're putting in it. Go at it hard and you'll burn more calories than if you're just going through the movements.A positive result of becoming more efficient as you advance is that you can use much less energy to produce much more power. My estimate is that efficient (whole body, koshi driven, whiplike) mechanics requires only 25% as much effort (less in some cases). You will not get as exhausted during training -- however, will not burn as many calories either. If you were doing 20 kata before using exhausting mechanics, you will not burn as many calories doing the same number of kata using efficient mechanics. To burn as many calories, you will have to do more kata or more exercises." - Karate Thoughts BlogSo it all depends on the martial artist. You may use more or less energy, thus burning more or less calories, than another martial artist doing the exact same kata. Hope this helps Shodan - Shaolin Kempo███████████████▌█

Evil Dave Posted August 9, 2012 Posted August 9, 2012 There are many variables to calculating actual calories used, remember that calories are a measurement of energy. Some of the variables are: your age, size, fitness level, metabolic rate, what you are doing, how hard you are doing it, work rest ratio, etc. etc. etc.Why are you looking into this? Curiosity, calorie counting, etc.
DWx Posted August 10, 2012 Posted August 10, 2012 Its pretty hard to say exactly how many calories you are burning each time you do a kata, but you could use a heart rate monitor to get a rough estimate. http://www.shapesense.com/fitness-exercise/calculators/heart-rate-based-calorie-burn-calculator.aspx "Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it." ~ Confucius
