Groinstrike Posted May 15, 2012 Posted May 15, 2012 Hi all,Injured my back playing golf(not training of course!!!)and was wanting to know if anyone had any good ideas for relieving pain from the sciatic nerve?I have never had back issues before, which is why i am being such a baby about it. I can't imagine having chronic back issues, hopefully this doesn't turn into one.
Evil Dave Posted May 15, 2012 Posted May 15, 2012 Try contacting your local physiotherapists, and look for one that works on backs. The physio should also be able to tell you if there is a structural issue and in that case you may need to see a chiropractor. Take care of your back.
hx35543 Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Try ice to numb the pain. General thought when it comes to a pulled or strained muscle is ice then heat. With the back it's not so. Most times heat on the back can aggravate the problem. Being an avid weightlifter, I am no stranger to back problems. My problems started between L4 and L5 in my lower back. I didn't know at the time, but my sciatic would catch hell. This happened before I was even taking karate and had nothing to do with weightlifting. It culprit was the way I slept since I was a kid. One day at the gym, my back went out. Anyway, shortly after, I went to a chiropractor who straightened me out within a period of time. I still deal with back problems from time to time I guess from my days of lifting and being young and stupid. That's my story. My advice, once you heal from this, strengthen your core a little more to help prevent re-injury. But take your time. Let your back heal completely. Don't push it. I had always heard once you start having back problems, you always have back problems. It turned out true for me. I hope you have better luck.
Groinstrike Posted May 16, 2012 Author Posted May 16, 2012 A few days of Ice, Strectching, aleve and icy-hot and im back on the mat, YAY!!!!
Deshikyle Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 My anatomy and physiology teacher was a massage therapist for a couple years, and she said one day if you had sciatic nerve pain, you could get a 'sciatic massage' where they basically elbow massage the nerve down in your uh...butt cheek. apparently if you have recurring problems, it helps a ton. TL;DR get your butt massaged Dammate keiko, translation: "shut up and train"
bassaiguy Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Try gentle extension exercises aka Mackenzie Exercises. Here's a link: Good luck "Honour, not honours." ~ Sir Richard Francis Burtonhttp://oronokarate.weebly.com
kensei Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 First off I hate the term Sciatica...its a term used by those that dont understand the issue you are having...like your doctor. The sciatic nerve complex is actually a set of nerves not a single nerve and the issue can be with one or several of them or at the point that they join in the complex. My suggestion is massage, roller work and stretching as well as watching were you keep your wallet, your seat at work and anything that can damage or hurt that nerve series. also, strengthen your lower back and hamstrings as well as STRETCHING often to avoid the muscle compressing the nerve bundle if that is the source of your issue.
