What do you call your Instructor(s)

Kyosanim, Sabeomnim, Kwanjangnim, Sempai, Sensei, Shihan, Shifu LaoShi, Guru etc. (appologies if I have missed off your title as it was not purposely)

Does the ettiquette within your school dictate that you call them by their title or is it more western and allows First names or Mr X or Sir or Ma'am to be used?

I expect all my students to address me by Sensei - within class, I also expect them to address visiting Instructors by their titles too

Looking forward to some excellent discussions

My school instructor (who DOES have a brick and mortar school) asks to be called Grandmaster, or simply Mister (last name). (I will not post names without permission, except for info protected by copyright).

I have heard other instructors to be called Master, or Grandmaster while in class, or the Japanese/Korean counterpart, but when talking 'informally' they ask for mister. (This included a dojo that I almost joined as a youth).

It is what you learn when you think you know everything that matters most! (unknown)

  • 1 year later...

We call my instructor Sensei or sensei Chris (his name). and then the other instructors Senpai (and their name if there is more than one senpai). When we have any other rank i.e. a 5th dan we will go for the proper title of shihan (unless he specifies otherwise)
