I recently started experiencing short bursts of pain in my spine. I was wondering, is it because of we have to step down hard when we punch? And is there any exercise I can do to strengthen my spine? I need your opinions guys.

I'd rather lose a 100 times in practice than 1 time in a combat situation.

Are you having pain in your muscles? Or pain directly in your spinal column? Those are two really different things.

If it's lower back pain, it could be a number of things. The way you sleep, your posture, the way you walk, etc. You can strengthen your back muscles, but it takes a while, you need someone to teach you how to properly do the exercises or you WILL hurt yourself, and you need some equipment for the best exercises.

I wouldn't be likely to attribute that kind of pain to stepping down hard when you punch. Now, if you have a direct spinal injury, you need to see a doctor or a chiropractor. There isn't a whole lot you can do for that on your own.

It's a spinal injury, or a lower spinal one to be more specific. I'm quite afraid that it'll affect my training or my way of life in the long run.

You will just have to see if this is a one off thing or a reoccuring thing.

If it is a reoccuring thing then it may be worth taking up a strength building program to help you.

From my reading on the subject most lower back injuries muscular and spinal are actually due to weak abdominal muscles. Your rectus abdominus actoually goes all the way round your midsection so it supports your back to acertain extent as well.

But then again as before it could just be a one off injury which happen to all of us.

The key to everything is continuity achieved by discipline.
