three60roundhouse Posted July 21, 2002 Posted July 21, 2002 Ok, so it's summer and I am picking up the training, but I know I am not doing enough cardio work. I weigh around 130 and would like to lose around 10 pounds correctly, not like most people my age losing water by starving themselves I have planned a diet and hope to stick to it. All I need is a pickup on cardio...but here's the problem - I despise running! I can walk for a while, but I don't know if that is enough. Rolling in BJJ, i know, is a good activity to lose weight, but I don't have time to do enough of it! Please! I need suggestions that do not include running! hehe. I don't know why i hate it so much. I guess it makes me think of my basketball coaches making me run endless laps for being late?? Thank you SOOOOO much! 1st dan Tae Kwon DoYellow Belt Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu16 Years OldGirls kick butt!
Blade13 Posted July 21, 2002 Posted July 21, 2002 Jumping rope is really good cardio. I read that it was 3x better than running. Also, start dancing! Breakdancing is even better, if you can do it.
Radok Posted July 21, 2002 Posted July 21, 2002 hey, 360.do sparring. that really wears you out. if you have a wavemaster do you kicks as fast as you can nonstop. If you can't laugh at yourself, there's no point. No point in what, you might ask? there's just no point. Many people seem to take Karate to get a Black Belt, rather than getting a Black Belt to learn Karate.
Jack Posted July 21, 2002 Posted July 21, 2002 I'm picking up the summer training. I absolutely hate running but I'm forcing myself to run several miles a day, even if I do pass out in the process. One method of burning fat which is more effective athan all long-duration cardio activities is Interval Training. This involves sprinting as fast as possible for twenty seconds, then having a ten second break. This is repeated eight times. You could use this or adapt it to another means of cardio like a stationary cycle, rowing machine, rope skipping, or any ergometer. It can be hard to get the same results from some things though, running is far superior. This Interval Training Works since while it may be so intense that it burns carbs for energy at the time, the metabolism rise stays all day to burn that fat. KickChick Posted July 21, 2002 Posted July 21, 2002 130 lbs. is not overweight ... (you didn't mention height) I'm 130 but I'm 5'8" ... you just may need to tone/define ... lifting free weight(burns fat and sculps your features!) , and adding some strength training exercises also. There is so much cardio available to you in the summer (... I hate winter!) If you can find a cardio kickbox class take a class 3 times a week an optimal cardio workout. Half of my class are girls your age and they are losing weight and toning/defining with my ab work. Swimming is excellant (throw kicks and punches in the water). See I personally need to do cardio which includes some form of ma training for me such as cardio kickbox, kicking and punching in water/swimming, jumping on trampoline doing kicks and spins, jump rope as Blade suggested. shadowboxing or just jump kicks to heavy back for 12-15 min. get the heart rate up! While doing cardio your heart rate should stay in a range between 60% and 80% of your MHR (Maximum Heart Rate). http://my.webmd.com/heartrate This should be your training zone. For best cardio and fat burning, keep your heart rate in the training zone for at least 12 minutes. The longer and more frequently you do this the more improvement you'll see. An cardio work out should last at least 12 minutes, not counting warm up or cool down, only the amount of time your heart rate is within your training zone. This is the amount of time needed for the body to start producing fat burning enzymes. The idea is that you want to get your body to use fat for energy. After 12 minutes you start to burn fat at a higher rate. Extend your cardio workout and you will burn more glycogen, and improve your endurance. Good Luck and feel free to pm me with questions!...Deby _________________ KarateForums Sensei 1st dan Tae Kwon Do (ITF) Cardio/Fitness Kickboxing Instr. monkeygirl Posted July 21, 2002 Posted July 21, 2002 You can use either water or sand to fill up your wavemaster. I would suggest sand because if it starts to leak, you can just vacuum it up...water can do some damage sometimes. I believe Lowe's carries sandbags in their swingset department. Not sure, though. 1st dan & Asst. Instructor TKD 2000-2003No matter the tune...if you can rock it, rock it hard.
