Okay does anyone else find it confusing to try and figure out what grade some one is in when they are in a different country? Well I do. I would really love to know how the British forms compare to our american grades.

We start kindergarten age 5

elementary school grades 1-4 are usually 6-9or 10 year olds

Middle school: grades 5-6, are usually 10-12 year olds.

Junior high grades 7-9 are usually 12-15 year olds.

High school is grades 10-12.

Age varires with grades as to when the birthday occurs. And some school systems are different and go 1-8 in one school then high school.

My local school has been going though a lot of changes over the past few years. Because our population in WV is getting smaller.

When I was in school it was like this

K-6 Grade School

7-9 Jr. High

10-12 High School

By the time I graduated it just changed to

K-4 Grade School

5-8 Middle School

9-12 High School

Next year we will change again

K-6 Grade School

7-12 Jr. and Sr. High School

The reson we are doing this is becasue WV is loosing so many peole due to work. Because of the geography of the state roads are not good. Thus consolidation is not easy. Plus we want to keep our local schools. Add to that our BOE has no clue about anything. LOL

In WV each county can set up what system they want.

Here Middle School is generally 6-8. It was still Junior High when I went through, grades 7-8.

The theory is that a Middle school is an improved version of Junior High. Junior High is structured like High School to prepare students for it. Middle School has elements of high school and elementary. Kids are put on a "team" with a given set of teachers (where I teach, it's so small each grade only has one team.) Teachers on the same team have the same lunch and planning period, so during planning period they have a team meeting. Parents can come in and be able to get all their child's teachers at one table, which is nice. You also know a lot more about what's going on, and the rules are easier to standardize.

Of course, much like "TKD Dojang," "Middle School" is not a copyrighted term and a lot of schools slap it on the sign as a matter of course. But it's not really that big a deal.
