I took some boxing for a while and really liked it, you could give it a try, where i took it from most people were really laid back and it was a fun all around environment, i also learned a lot and it helped me with my hands in other arts. You could just try it once and if you don't like it then don't go back.

Boxing is more about hard work than anything else.... you will spend far more time skipping, hitting a bag/focus mitts, shadowboxing, doing pushups and situps, than you will getting your head punched in.

As for being "to violent", boxing is closer to the true realities of violence than alot of martial arts, when you try to hit someone in boxing, your actually trying to hit them full speed/(often) full force... and they are trying to do the same, if self defense is a goal of yours, this experience is invaluable.

Agreed 100%.

Well guys last night i gave it a try...and yes i was pleasantly surprised. :D I have suffered though. Just in that one hours lesson i have damaged my elbow and both my arms are weak and shaking today...is this normal and will this get better? Right now i cant even lift a mug of coffee without shaking :o

This is due to the fact that for almost the whole hour i was holding focus mitts while another boxing punched them over and over. It didnt help that the previous night we were doing arm locks in my karate lesson. I will give it another go, as i say i did enjoy it, i don't think i have ever had a better work-out!

Hey, Kez, glad you had a good time. :)

The soreness will pass. Just make sure to take ample time to rest.

I think you'll find that the fitness level of Boxing will greatly improve your performances in Karate, too.

When i first started boxing, the first few weeks my hands were also shaking quite a bit. It was from all of the bag work which my hands were not used to. There's nothing to worry about, it'll go away soon.

We incorporate some boxing in are karate lessons. I love it! It is a great work out for the mitt holder and the one hitting the mitts. Sometimes I do not know who gets more of a work out. :P :karate:

There was something else i forgot to mention in my last post. The boxing instructor i feel has less stamina than the students lol  He showed me and my friend what to do but then left us to it, he didn't come over and check on us, i think he came over once in the whole hour! He is a little overweight and gets tired easily, not sure if he is a retired pro boxer or not. Its quite funny because he needs a few minutes time out

Anyway, another go tonight see how i feel after that. Another thing i don't like is that we have to use their gloves and they stink something rotton. I imagine how many hands have been in them and they smell like sweaty feet :o Will have to buy my own if i stick at it.

Being a former boxer myself, I know why often a person with a martial arts background will go into a boxing session and feel more tired than one of the guys there. Boxers typically wear gloves on their hands when doing their techniques, anywhere up to 1 pound (16oz), whereas your typical martial artist doesn't. 1 pound may not seem like a lot, but it actually provides great conditioning.

Despite the fact that in Kyokushin we don't wear gloves when we spar, I still enjoy shadowboxing in a pair of 16oz gloves just for the conditioning effect.

Yuck! :x

I know my sensei has a pair of focus mitts that smell bad and after 3 times washing my hands I could not get the smell off my hands so I started to bring mine from home and I use my own instead of his. Take plenty of hand sanitizer for afterward.
