rayjag Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Hello all,Has anyone had any experience with the recoup time coming back from a microdisectomy? It is a minor back operation. I just had the procedure done yesterday and I am wondering if there is anyone out there with first hand experience or has known any one in the same shoes as me.I primarily study Tae Kwon Do.Thanks!RJ
BDPulver Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 Yup, right here. I had a removal of 2/3rds of my L4 disc i think it was. Not sure what the procedure was called now.Recoup time depends on you. I never went to physical therapy and did all the therapy myself. I lost my job so had to do all of it. I think after my 2nd week I got bored and started on simple things like walking with a cane for starters. There's some things I still have trouble doing though. One of them is doing toe touches. I get up every morning and do stretches for a bit to loosen up. Sit for a bit and relax before I get my boots on. Then I'm ready for the day.My procedure was probably more intense then what you had though. I can really feel the weather change and have to watch how I twist and move but all in all I would say first week relax. 2nd week start walking around to loosen up those tight muscles.I will say this, it took me over 2 yrs to be able to start jogging even though its more of a walk jog but its me putting myself through my own therapy to get stronger again.Hope this helps a little for you.
bushido_man96 Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 One thing that I have seen with back injury recovery is that you really have to take your time. You can't hurry it, because if you do, you'll end up keeping yourself out for even longer. Its really touchy, and because your back does so much, it is going to affect and be affected by everything that you do. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
rayjag Posted February 24, 2009 Author Posted February 24, 2009 Well according to the doc, I have to take it easy for the next 3 weeks, a total of 3 weeks after the surgery. That means no running, jumping, excessive twisting(round kicks out of the question), lifting weight over 20 lbs. ect. After 3 weeks and up to 4 months pretty much back to normal, no heavy lifting though, no more than 50lbs. I may have to sit out some classes and this will probably slow me down one advancement cycle. I should be able to return to assisting at the end of this week though. I assist all day Saturdays at my school. I will just have to listen to my body and play it by ear.
BDPulver Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 I'm sure I was told same thing but unfortunately I lost my job same day I had surgery so I needed to recupe quick to start looking again.
bushido_man96 Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 Playing it by ear will be a good thing. You don't want to rush it, have a setback, and then miss out on more training, for sure. Good luck with the rehab. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
