In my schools, we just do alot of AB works, like striking the abs, with the tip of the bo staffs and punching and kicking the abs, because the abdominals are considered your core in my arts, so we do alot of ab work. If you can take the hit, you can continue to go, and even with forms, if your core is strong, your body is along with it.

Some great advice here.

A lot of it also depends on what your strengths and weaknesses are. Some guys are like me: we have a great deal of strength and can take some punishment, but our endurance and flexibility can be a weak point if we're not careful. Another guy may have great endurance and flexibility, but his techniques might not be strong enough to be respected by his opponents.

This is why it's hard to make a "one size fits all" approach for competition training.
