What Is A Typical Class For You ?

Recommended Posts

I'm doing kempo karate and depending on which class, we either jump right in, or start with stretching.

Stretching

basics (punching, blocks and kicks)

split into groups based on rank for forms, combinations, weapons and kempos.

Some classes end with sparing

At the dojo I attend, the typical Isshin-ryu Karate class follows the format stated below:

1) Formal commencement of class and meditation

2) Warm-ups, stretching and callisthenics

3) 15 upper basics

4) 8 basic kicks

5) Self-defense or technique drills

6) Katas and/or Sparring

7) Meditation and formal dismissal of class

The classes are officially one hour long, but an extra half hour is available for additional instruction when required or needed.

For all styles: what is a typical class like for you in the style you train in ?

I know every class might be different, but more or less, from start to finish....give an example.

On an ordinary day, mine could go like this:

Warm-ups

Drills

Form practice

Self Defense Techniques

Sparring

The last three not necessarily in that order.

Warm Up:

2mins jump rope

2mins shadowobxing - western boxing only

2mins shadowboxing - muay thai

Boxing:

Corner drill - 2-4 rounds

Counterpunch drills - 2-4 rounds

Sparring - 2-4 rounds each pair

Clinch:

Double leg

Second moves from double leg takedown (sit out, back heel trip, etc.)

Hand Fight

Pummel

Hand Fight into Pummel

Clinch striking:

Muay thai Plum position

Grappling:

Drill positional wrestling and submissions

Sparring

3 hours - that's what we've been doing lately. We don't usually work clinch takedowns and clinch striking on the same nights - usually one or the other.

Wow, I'm amazed that some of you have 3 hour classes. That's fantastic!

  • 4 months later...

warm ups/stretching

sonaba zuki (practice blocks and strikes)

jun zuki (practice various types of stepping and punching)

"lesson"

kata

1 extra activity (escrimas, heads and knees, rolling, techniques you wouldn't normally do)

usually warm ups are okay depending on what we do on that month, but if it's squats or calf raises, im pretty much dying the whole class, but if it's bicycles, or stretching, im good.

Open class for self practice*

Some days we work harder on the drills and Sparring if there's a new tech Sensei wants to show us

*We usually break up in belt groups and practice our material. If an individual is ready, he/she will be taught the next move by Sensei.

Class time 90min.
