Testing your punching power..

Featured Replies

I hit a 'Dragon Punch' machine in an arcade once and got over 9300, which was the best of three attempts.

I think it's hard to say whether these are good measurements of a good punch though.

psi? 9300 is probably your score.. cause if you could do that you could probably punch a crater in the earth.. :)

woah- where do you get one of those things? I am assuming that it is one made specifically for recording hitting power? The thing that I have always wanted to play around with were crash test dummies and ballistics gel...I watch too much Mythbusters

Cool. I should look into some of that stuff. I think that the students would have fun with them.

What would be cool to do is take one of those, and have you white belts test on them when they first start. Then, as they improve in rank, test them again, and record it each time. Then show them the difference from when they began and when they hit black belt.

that is exactly what my Kenpo instructor is doing.. he said that most white belts under 180 lbs. will hit around a 500 or 600..

That is cool. I would love to know what level I am at. I don't know that my punches are all that great.

I have heard that you can get a tire. fill it with air, put a psi gauge in it and punch the tire? I haven't ever done it, but is seemed somewhat logical.. :) kinda strange though

That does sound interesting, but I am not sure how well it would work. Have you ever punched a car tire? Not a very secure area to punch, I think. Your hand would bounce right off, don't you think?

yeah that is what i was thinking too...

Lol, yeah I wish..

It was just a score, out of a possible 9999 I think, so not too bad...

I had optimised my punch for how the machine read it, not necessarily how I may punch a potential assailant.

Which leaves me to add, that anything that reads power, sometimes doesn't always read the mass behind a technique. Just the speed.
