Ok so to make this as simple as possible I will post my stats and what martial arts are available to me.

Age :20

Sex :Male

Height :4'11''

Weight: 130

Likes: Blocking,avoiding,diverting attacks and close standing/groundwork

Dislikes: Higher kicks, spins, rolls, acrobatic flashy styles

The Abahaya Academy sounds like it is geared more towards MMA competition. That may not be up your alley, unless you want to try your hand in the light-weight class.

The Kung Fu style may have the redirecting hand work that you like, with the Chi Sao and sticking hands work, if it is a Wing Chun style.

I would go check out each of the schools, and talk to the instructors about your interests and concerns, and see what they have to say. Also, watch a class of each, and take some notes and ask questions afterwards.

You sound like quite a small guy, so Uechi Ryu sounds like it could be effective to me (but I am obviously slightly biased :wink: ).

But all I can suggest is to look around and do your research, and see what you like.

Also, what is it you really want form training in the martial arts?

The teacher makes the style, not the name.

Go to each dojo, sit through a class. Most instructors are accomodating, and would probably let you train for one class to see if you like it.

I want to learn how to defend myself and stop from people thinking they can push me around because im smaller. Yes I am smaller but im also a stocky guy pressing in a 150lbs (currently have a hernia so working out is not an option which made me put on a ton of pounds) after my operation I should be dropping that 30 extra lbs I had on then will be ready to get back in shape for starting martial arts. Can you tell me what the basics of what Uechi Ryu is?

You could look up Uechi Ryu in Wikipedia, and also search Google to get some results.

As far as getting to where people don't think they can push you around, that is going to have more to do with the way you present and carry yourself; attitude and confidence. Those are things you can work on by yourself as well. The training will help, but start inside.

Being 4'9" it's pretty hard to carry yourself not to be pushed around. I do get along with most everyone at work and school but all the randoms at bars try to push me around and just like walking on the streets.

Well, you could stay out of bars.

Otherwise, this is just something you are going to have to work your way around. Even if you do get into the Martial Arts, people may still treat you the same way. It is more of a matter of keeping yourself out of situations like that.
