skr1111 Posted December 23, 2007 Posted December 23, 2007 Hi, I am new to this forum and this is my first post. I took karate a couple years ago in college, and in one of the training sessions, our instructor had us lie down and he walked on our stomachs. Has anyone else experienced this type of training in their martial arts class? If so, do you know what purpose it serves? I thought it was to condition our stomachs and truly I don't think it is a bad exercise if the instructor is careful. One thing I will mention is that it seems like female instructors would be more effective in this type of training because they tend to be lighter and are less likely to cause injury. Any insight is appreciated. Thanks.
SkidRow Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 (edited) My old instructor did something similar,He never did it to women though which suprised me. Edited February 11, 2008 by SkidRow
Kieran-Lilith Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 I have heard of the walking on stomachs thing, and it was done to my instructor, but he doesn't do it to us. As for the punching the stomach...yeah, I know that one. Guys and girls at our dojo get it. I wonder why your instructor wouldn't allow the women to do it, though? SkidRow Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 I'm not really sure but if I remember correctly at the time all the females tended to be around the age of 16 and under, maybe that was why?
Kieran-Lilith Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 That would make more sense. Age tends to play a bigger part in stuff like that, I think. Younger people have a harder time focusing and tensing their muscles correctly. He who gains a victory over other men is strong; but he who gains a victory over himself is all powerful Lao-tsu
Jeet Kune Do Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 its supposed to make you ab muscles hard, i think when the teacher is about to step on you, you begin to tense hard so thatpractice tensing it at the right moment...i would disagree on the female thing, if you have a heavy man step on you then mabye it will make it harder, although im not sure if itsthe same as body building, but your ab muscles do contract... A drop of sweat spent in practice is a drop of blood saved in a battle.A person who say it cannot be done should not interrupt the man doing it.
Kieran-Lilith Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 I think maybe body type plays more of an issue than male or female. I think a scrawny guy would have just as bad a time as a stick-thin female. He who gains a victory over other men is strong; but he who gains a victory over himself is all powerful Lao-tsu
ShoriKid Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 It's pretty typical ab conditioning really. Had it done and done it plenty of times with leg lifts. A tough varient has one foot on the abs, one on about mid thigh of the raised legs. Pretty much the same as using weighted lifts to build up your arms. It's a resistance drill that doesn't endanger your back. Kisshu fushin, Oni te hotoke kokoro. A demon's hand, a saint's heart. -- Osensei Shoshin Nagamine
Fish Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Last week in class our sensei dropped a medicine ball on our stomachs as we were tensing - same idea, I think this is used by boxers. "They can because they think they can." - School Motto.(Shodan 11th Oct 08)
bushido_man96 Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 They all sound like some great supplemental exercises to do for the abs. The medicine ball and the stepping are good for simulating the act of getting hit. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
