What's on your black belt?

Mine is the first black belt ever worn by Gichin Funakoshi, so...

It's invulnerable to bullets so...

It was given to me by my best friend, the Emperor of Japan so...

I earned it in like two weeks, so...

I had to learn all the kata ever and fight two hundred elephants so...

To preserve the enemies armies is best, to destroy their armies, second best.

I know, I just had a plain black one. Recently, I was given a new one by my instructor. Name and rank bars on one end, the art's name on the other. Too bad I don't wear belts more often, it's pretty nice.

There are only two good black belt looks:

1. A brand new black belt when you have just achieved 1st Dan

2. A heavily worn and tattered blackbelt (from hard work not from rubbing and banging it) that reminds you of the journey you have made.

I know some people are a it pretective of a plain belt but I think you can have anything on it if you want you have earned it and need to be able to justify it when you wear it. Just need to remember it is only an indication of the journey and expreience you have had not your ability. I my humble experience a true black belt starts to learn when they get their 1st Dan and start to understand from 3rd dan.

Not a fan of those who say you shoulnt wear a belt that is jist reverse snobbery.

What are peoples thoughts on red and white belts for renshis?

Well, its just another belt, right? I think it should depend on the organization involved (if there is one), and what the practitioner feels he/she should wear.

Just dan stripes on the one I wear in my karate dojo

on the one I wear for TKD, my Korean name (in Korean) on one side, and New York University in Korean on the other

Refereing to the red and white belts...I have only ever seen that once and that was in a book! Stating it was from the style shotokan, but in all the years i have been in shotokan i have never seen it. I once asked my sensei and he shrugged it off. Has anyone else seen this? I bet you wouldn't be able to get them embroidered.

My sensei has a red and white belt he keeps for formal occasions. He uses it for belt testings, tournaments, ranking ceremonies, etc. That's it. The rest of the time, he wears a black belt with rank stripes and Isshin-Ryu on the opposite side.
