I would rather be as strong, fast, and agile as I can be..and NEVER fight, than be physically unfit, and be in a self defense situation.

As said above, just having the vitality for the aspect of Life itself is good.

As Sohan once said, to put it vaguely, good luck defending yourself against a former inmate whose been doing nothing but pumping iron in the jailyard for 12 years, while you're having problems breathing.

These are some of the thoughts that I have had, myself. Being fit definitely improves quality of life. I also think being strong helps in self-defense a lot.

I agree that it's not necessary. Even the most untrained person can get a lucky shot in. However, being physically fit will improve those odds dramatically. Even if it's just to give you the ability to run away. :D

The real issue here is practicing martial arts does not mean you don't have to be strong. Unfortunately, too many modern martial arts schools seem to present the idea that simply practicing (their) martial art will make you a fighting god.
