the promotion to shodan usually takes about 3-4 years where i have taken classes. yet it depends on how much technical skill that your sensei expects as the standard. most traditional dojo require about 6-7 years of training before promotion to shodan. the anwer to your question should reflect the learning ability and commitment of the student.

Average for us is around 3.5 years. You can actually get it in 1 year / 18 months but you'd have to do several hours a day all week and I've never known anyone to acheive this.

I received my Shodan after 8 years of training. However I think I've taken the Martial Arts more to heart in the past two years as I started at the age of 8. Until I realized I have the potential to be the best I wanted to be I didn't try very hard. I wish my eyes were opened sooner. In our school I think a serious student could get there in 2-3 years. :karate:

Took me nearly 3 years, but at that time I was attending every class offered 4 nights a week and Saturdays (ended up being like 18 classes a week). The average person at our dojo is usually ready to test after 4 - 5 years. That is attending 2 classes a week.
