Average time to get to Shodan?

Recommended Posts

About 4 years for me in Isshinryu...though the school I run now, you can get it in 3 if you are really really motivated.

Took me two years pretty steady to get it in Okinawan Kobudo.

I think it is "theoretically" possible to do it in our association in approx 4 years, but I have never known anyone to actually do that. Most take about 6-7 years of regular un-interrupted training.

I took about 11 years (slow learner!!). After that, my Dan grading have been at between 5 and 6 year intervals.

I think that in most Karate dojos Sandan (3rd Dan) is considered the first "senior grade", and I think that it is generally accepted that the minimum period of training for this should be between 15-20 years.
