Most take about 6-7 years of regular un-interrupted training. I took about 11 years (slow learner!!). After that, my Dan grading have been at between 5 and 6 year intervals.I think that in most Karate dojos Sandan (3rd Dan) is considered the first "senior grade", and I think that it is generally accepted that the minimum period of training for this should be between 15-20 years.
