Well basically i have been trying to get defined abs for about 3 months now but although i have put on more muscle in my abs they feel defined however they dont look defined ie not aesthetic well you might say that the problem is my body fat percentage is too high however i am prettty sure its not i have lost about an inch and a half from my waist line and i now weigh about 57kg so i really dont want to loose any more weight or get any thinner or buying nice clothes will be difficult as 28' is the smallest waist size most shops go to. Also i belive if i get any lighter it will be unhealthy so how do i get defined abs? my current training program consists of leg raises and sit ups and some v ups altho i dont like these. When i can get to the gym i use an abs machine this seems to work better as weight is involved but i have nothing like this at home the only equipment i have is dumbells

advice needed

Definition comes from not having body fat over your muscles, and I think it has to be pretty low.

Sorry.

Fat is a completely separate type of tissue than muscle...you can gain as much muscle as you want under fat but the only way to lose fat is to do cardio. There is no such thing as spot reduction as in I work my abs and the fat will come off of my stomach.

The key to losing body fat is to burn more calories than you take in....thats it.....no pill...no secret......just burn more than you take in.

Defined abs is a good goal for some....however...defined abs don't mean strong or powerful abs by any means.

My opinions...

If you want to gauge it; have your body fat tested. Most gyms and healthclubs will do it for minimal cost or for free. You can go as low as 10%ish healthfully.

T;hat depends on your age- if you are a teenager (and, for instance, in track) it wouldn't be out of the realm of health to be as low as 4 or 5.

Yikes!! That's pretty low! While that may not be uncommon among gymnasts, it's still not suggested. Even teenagers need fat. I wouldn't suggest dropping much below 8% for males and 10% for females. It may sound high, but those are very low percentages. Below that and most females begin to experience a cessation of their menstral cycles which isn't a good thing.

Who told you 4 or 5? I'm a trained exercise physiologist and have never heard those to be HEALTHY numbers. People do it, but it's not healthy.

well im 17

Sad to say, if you want the washboard abs you need to lose the fat. That will probably mean getting skinnier.
