muaythaidm Posted May 26, 2002 Posted May 26, 2002 Hapkido-Cougar "Kickboxing.. is better than Muay thai... " Why
Eye of the Tiger Posted May 27, 2002 Author Posted May 27, 2002 I wasn't going to reply to this, but after what I read in the General Martal Arts section (hapkido vs Tai Kwon Do) I thought I might as well. Kickboxing is BETTER coz its more popular, you work a lot more on strenghing your punches and kicks so its excellent if you do another martial art e.g. Karate. Everyone knows what it is, more competitions as there is more clubs.
Danny boy Posted May 28, 2002 Posted May 28, 2002 Sorry to burst your bubble but Muay Thai is more popular outside the USA. In Australia and New Zealand kickboxing is no where near as popular MT. Japan has MT and the K1 series(which is basically modified Thai) Europe is MT mad and has some of the very best fighters. No one is into conditioning as well as the Thais, they are the Kings. Kickboxing was created in Japan in the late '60s,it was a modified version of what the Thais were doing, then American picked it up and changed it again and called it "kickboxing or full contact".It was the US that usd the Karate and Tae Kwon Do type kicking. 2 groups formed; the PKA and the WKA. PKA had an 8 kick per round rule and kicking had to be above the belt. WKA could kick to the legs. Both had their own world champions. From this there grew new groups,ISKA,KICK,WAKO,WKO,WKC and the list goes on and on.A ****e load of politics. Meanwhile the Muay Thai from Thailand was and always will be run by the Thai government, this why Mt will always be stronger. The rules are always the same and have been since 1929. As for the fighter side of this there are great fighters from Kickboxing and Muay Thai but comparing them is not going to prove anything, they are the same but different. Picking up stuff from both is the best thing to do and be an individual not a style. peace.
Eye of the Tiger Posted May 28, 2002 Author Posted May 28, 2002 Nicely put. Kickboxing is more of a sport than MT as you are more agile on your feet coz you only punch and kick, whereas MT you have to get right up close to yous knees and elbows. MT is more for self defence.
Kempo_Dude Posted May 29, 2002 Posted May 29, 2002 Muay thai VS Kickboxing. Muay thai will win. Cause its tougher than kickboxing. Kempo dude says: Stand up show me what you got, im black belter in kempo, im a Kempo champ. lets see who will win!
VoiceOVUnreason Posted July 17, 2002 Posted July 17, 2002 I saw some pretty wierd replies to these posts about Muay Thai vs. Kickboxing. First of all, understand the difference. Muay Thai is not a sport, its a way of life, combining the spiritual and physical world. To many people in Thailand, it is their life. If you've ever seen a Thai fight, they perform rituals before the fight itself. Ex. Wai Khru. Kickboxing, on the other hand, is a sport, just like baseball or basketball. The physical difference of course are the knees, elbows, and grapples that Muay Thai has, which kickboxing doesnt include. But to ask, who would win a fight...Muay Thai vs. Kickboxer is a very stupid question. Because your comparing somebody who fights for their life, to somebody who fights as a hobby. There is no doubt that the Muay Thai fighter would win, taking in that both are similarly experienced and trained. If you think otherwise, then your a buffoon. Its as simple as that. Id like to hear any comments. Peace, in the middle east.
rabid hamster Posted July 17, 2002 Posted July 17, 2002 Muay Thai vs Kickboxing.. Well I'd saly Muay thai would be better for self defense, but it doesn't mean muay thai will win, even if they are equal in strength, speed, reflexes etc... Luck is very important too... And there's no way two people will be exactly equal in their abilities. Though the muay thai practioner might know more techniques then the kickboxer, it doesn't mean muay thai guys will beat kickboxers... To say so would be stupid. It is only with the heart that one can see clearly, for the most essential things are invisible to the eye.
rabid hamster Posted July 17, 2002 Posted July 17, 2002 also i always thought kickboxing did have elbows and knees, but they just couldn't use them in the ring. It is only with the heart that one can see clearly, for the most essential things are invisible to the eye.
Eye of the Tiger Posted July 17, 2002 Author Posted July 17, 2002 If you took the average Kickboxer and the average Muay Thai fighter I would bet on the Muay Thai fighter. Although no Art is better than another, as VoiceOVUnreason said Muay Thai is a way of life where for an average kickboxer it would probobly consist of all his training only taking place at the session. I personally am not the average kickboxer, I train inm karate and kickboxing every day as well as conditioning my body to take a lot of punishment, as well as physical exercises. I amy be a kickboxer, but I'm just as tough as a Muay Thai, so yes, not every Muay Thai fighter would beat a kickboxer. And also I hate this fighting consisting of luck, its down to your instincts and your own spirit to make the right choices so no luck has nothing to do with it.
Skye Posted July 18, 2002 Posted July 18, 2002 Well lets assume there are no rules. A kickboxer would want to keep their distance to use their more highly trained kicks and punches and a muay thai boxer would want to grapple to use their knees and elbows. As long as the kickboxer was decent enough to keep out of the grapple then they would have a good chance of winning. Not taking anything away from them but a big reason that Thai's tend to win alot of their fights in Thailand is the rule system there that rewards elbows and knees. Muay thai is definately a sport, the national sport of Thailand. Either can be a way of life or a hobby. If I were betting my money would be on the muay thai guy though...but then I do muay thai.
