The first color is usually white and the last color is usually black. There could be any mariad of colors in between depending on where you train. In the orginization I studied it was as follows:

White, Orange, Yellow, Blue, Green, Purple, Brown, Black

Of course the degrees of black come after this, but there is no appreciable difference in the belt. It just looks older due to wear and tear. Some systems use stripes on the belt to differentiate between the dan levels.

Ps1 is right, it varies. At my school it is:

White (8th kyu)

yellow (7th kyu)

orange (6th kyu)

green (5th kyu)

blue (4th kyu)

brown (3th kyu)

brown (2nd kyu)

brown (1st kyu)

black (1st dan)

Train harder!

Currently: 7th kyu, yellow belt

Traditional:

White (8th/7th kyu)

Green (6th, 5th, 4th kyu)

Brown (3rd, 2nd, 1st kyu)

Black (1st dan and up)

Non-Traditional could be just about anything between...

Elky, what I wrote is correct - considering that I am JKA.

A school or dojo can add whatever incentive colors they wish to, but they are not a traditional recognized color by JKA.

It does vary, i know loads of different shotokan practitionars whose belt system are different. But here is mine.

White

Orange

Red

Yellow

Green

Purple

purple/white

brown

brown/white

brown/white/white

black

Ours is the same as this.

I also think most KUGB and JKA clubs tend to follow this model. (not that I am either)
