P.A.L Posted December 10, 2006 Posted December 10, 2006 We have a Itosu no passai which we call it Passai sho starts with right step, should be same as Bassai Dai. We also have Matsumura no passai which we call it Passai Dai and starts with left step.
AngelaG Posted December 10, 2006 Posted December 10, 2006 I personally don't particularly like Bassai Sho, which is a bit weird as I love Bassai Dai. Tokonkai Karate-do Instructorhttp://www.karateresource.com Kata, Bunkai, Articles, Reviews, History, Uncovering the Myths, Discussion Forum
Shotokan-kez Posted December 10, 2006 Author Posted December 10, 2006 I do like bassai-dai angela but going from 3rd kyu to 1st dan is just like nothing but bassai-dai...kinda loses the excitement of the kata. Walk away and your always a winner. https://www.shikata-shotokan.co.uk

I never grew bored of bassai dai. Although I did work on kanku dai, hangetsu, empi and jion as well, so by the time I went for my shodan I knew all five of the choices for shodan. rmclain Posted December 12, 2006 Posted December 12, 2006 Yes, Yasutsune Itosu is credited with the creation of Passai Sho (Bassai So).R. McLain

McLainbut passai sho and Bassai sho are not the same, does it mean Itosu created 2 passai? we know Bassai dai is a Itosu kata for sure but i don't think any shorin ryu style practice anything close to Bassai sho which makes me think that is not a Itosu kata.
Rick_72 Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 We practice both Passai Sho and Dai in Matsumura Seito Shorin Ryu, however, I'd have to re-look at the Bassai's to see how similar they are. There are different versions of Passai's (based off of discipline), just like I'm sure there are with Bassai's, but I'm pretty sure Passai and Bassai are supposed to be similar in technique. At least that's what's been explained to me. Some styles call them Passai, some Bassai.

Bassai So is the Korean pronounciation of "Passai Sho." Now, maybe the Korean version has changed from teacher to teacher in Korea. But, this is originally the same form.Eizo Shimabukuro (Shorin-Ryu) in Ginoza Village, Okinawa teaches this form. R. McLain
