GATES Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 what do knuckle push ups really do to your knuckles?there is so many contradicting veiws i just want to know the truth.cheers Train hard fight easy.
Havoc88 Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 I do not think knuckle push ups have a positive effect on your knuckles.I do think that they have a positive effect on your wrists when you have weak wrists, because while doing knuckle pushups there is no stress on your wrists. Havoc88 Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 Yeah, I heard about it too. Let's wait for someone else to explain it better than me Tom Train harder!Currently: 7th kyu, yellow belt
Sohan Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 Knuckle pushups strengthen the wrists and toughen the knuckles. The smaller footprint causes you to use more synergistic muscles for stability, so knuckle pushups are likely better for the development of functional strength. If you do enough of them on a consistent basis, they can improve bone density in the bones of the hands, which may lessen risk of breakage. Lastly, they also better mimic the mechanics of a real punch better than flat hand pushups. With respect,Sohan "If I cannot become one of extraordinary accomplishment, I will not walk the earth." Konoko Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 I have found that my striking knuckles are a bit bigger and a lot differently shaped than my non MA friends, which I guess must be from doing knuckle pushups
lordtariel Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 We hold ourselves up on our fists with our fists off of the mats and on the carpet. After a while we come up and look at our knuckles. If we're doing it right, the carpet indentations will show only on the striking portion of the fist. It's another good way to make sure you're making a proper fist. There's no place like 127.0.0.1
Toby Posted October 28, 2006 Posted October 28, 2006 I can do knuckle push-ups no worries.I tried doing three finger push-ups today and could do them too, was quite surprised.Speaking of which, is this a good idea, to be doing knuckle and finger push-ups?Okay, well maybe only wondering about finger push-ups now... Since knuckle push-ups have been covered already.Actually, I'll do a search, see what I can come up with. "The key to immortality is first living a life worth remembering." - Bruce Lee
