Why its good to train out of uniform...

Recommended Posts

Once a year we do a plain clothes class but it's usually doing just self defence work and not necessarily basics, kata or kumite. I might give it a go one week just to see how everyone takes to it.

Also I must ditto Iceman's comments. I also make sure I can kick in any trousers/jeans that I buy when I'm trying them on in the changing rooms.

I think its a common thing for guys in MA. But I we broke the "guy code" by admitting it. :D

We occasionally train with two pound ankle weights, which simulate footwear, but there is no substitute for an actual pair of shoes or boots.

Yeah, because you can't kick the ankel weights off at your opponent!!

Hehe  Richard do you do a karate class in the changing cubicle to check you can use karate in the clothes? I can just vision you in the changing room in front of the mirror with new jeans with the tags practising kicks and stuff

I gotta admit i suppose this is important. The fact that your not in your gi when your socialising, when others are most likely to start problems.

I can remember when Century was starting to sell Billy Jack jeans. Do they still sell them??

I don't think so anymore. They weren't very nice jeans, you could kick in them, but they were ugly.

I believe that training once in awhile in street clothes may be important, but everyone here really enjoys training and trains hard. If attacked outside, instinct takes over and your body will do what it has been trained to do without thinking first "oh my gosh, I have constricting jeans on today."

A great martial artist is one who is humble and respectful of others.

That's why I don't wear tight jeans. At worst I have a pair of stretch fit pierre cardin jeans that I wear out on the town, but the rest of the time I wear loose fit jeans. Can't stand boot cut or straight fit ones. Too stiff for my liking. When I'm trying them on in the cubicle I'll do some knee lifts, try a couple of stances (shiko or kiba dachi mostly) if I'm comfortable while doing that I'll usually buy them. :karate:

You know, this is not only important from a martial arts prospective, but also lets you know that you will at least be able to work in the jeans. And you will know that if you bend over or squat down, you won't blow them out!!!
