tkdkid39 Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 hello this might be a stupid question but which is better to learn befor 3 section staff, staff or nunchaku. or both?thanksp.s if this was asked just send me a link to the one cuz i looked but couldent find one
bushido_man96 Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 I would learn the staff first, but that is my preference. I think it is easier to control than the chucks, and more of it will transfer to the use of the 3 section staff. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
SBN Doug Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 I'd have to agree. I haven't begun the sectional staff, but have been training in staff and jool bong (nunchaku) for a few years. When I see someone wielding a sectional staff, I see more staff technique in it than jool bong. However, if you have the time, they do not conflict and you could do a 70/30 split where you train in chucks just enough to get a feel for the spinning techniques required. cathal Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 I'd start with the bo, and then the nunchucku. It would be a good idea to start learning the bo, and of course the nunchuku so that you can get more comfortable with sectioned weapons. .The best victory is when the opponent surrendersof its own accord before there are any actualhostilities...It is best to win without fighting.- Sun-tzu
Leopard claw Posted November 3, 2006 Posted November 3, 2006 Start with the bo first and learn how to do a figure eight, this will help you later with the three sectional staff and the nunchaku. There is a good video/dvd by Black Belt magazine video with Eric Lee. It will help you out with proper gripping, footwork, stances, maneuvering and fighting techniques. It's not an easy weapon to lean, it bites back hard! How many nuns could a nunchuk chuck if a nunchuk could chuck nuns?
ArisuTanaka Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 i would say: escrimas, numchuku, then bo. b/c each are similiar to the 3 sec. staff in their own way. Plus it could'nt hurt to learn some variety? If you learn alittle of the basics of all three weapons listed above then you'll be able to use them with the 3 sec. staff. Thats what i did. it helped. Be careful, though, in early training i had a bloody nose or two b/c i tryed to hard. "Never leave that to tomorrow for which you can do today." -Ben. Frank.
ArisuTanaka Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 Good luck with the 3 sec. staff! "Never leave that to tomorrow for which you can do today." -Ben. Frank.
mantis.style Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 Nunchaku do not relate to the three section staff at all. The three sectioned staff, as the name implies, is a staff. There are drills that can be sort of taught by using a normal staff as substitute but to learn to use the three section staff, the only thing you can practice with, is a three section staff. With that said, all schools of chinese martial arts that I know that has the three section staff as part of their curriculum, would teach the staff first anyway. traditional chinese saying:speak much, wrong much
