Why Don't More Martial Artists Train Like Boxers?

Weightlifting is one way. Add strength and power exercises, even to your aerobics. For instance, do punching with dumbbells. Ride a stationary or regular bike with ankle weights. (Don't run in them, though, because of the pounding.) Do situps or crunches with weight on your chest.

I'll bet if you Google "anaerobic exercise" you can find a lot.

So how does one train the anaerobic system effectively? I've read up a bit on it on wikipedia and other sources but I'm still not quite sure how to do it.

Generally, the anaerobic system can be trained by using high intesity, short duration exercises. Things like burpees, running hills, and sprints are popular ways to train anaerobic capacity.

Fast, repetitive high-rep lifts with light weights are good, too. You'll work different muscle fibers than the heavy lifts you do with reps of less than 10 per set. Like BM said, think of working out aerobically but with something that your body has to resist against, for short durations.
