I've been rope skipping since I was an amateur boxer and still do at age 40. It's a shame more martial artists don't utilize it as part of their training, since just 3-4 three minute rounds can do wonders for conditioning. Just don't ever do it in bare feet (I speak from experience).

A $3 rope and AndrewGreen's $5 medicine ball and you have the workings of a very good cheap home gym.

Thanks for the tip, as I do most of my skipping barefoot on a concrete floor. I havent experienced any pain, so i assume you are talking about a long term sort of thing.

Man, you must have some tough feet. :)

Every injury I have ever had from rope skipping has come from either doing it barefoot or doing it on concrete, and you're doing both. But I'm just speaking for myself, though I wouldn't recommend it on a regular basis.

I've done a little with a jump rope, but the house is too small and the yard is very uneven and soft, so the only place I can really do it is in the driveway and I'm a little self-concious.

I like the workout I get from skipping rope, but I am not very good at it yet. I try to work on one foot, and then the next, but it is coming along slowly. I have been doing it between sets when I am at the gym.

I've only ever used the skipping rope as a warm up to hittin ghte heavy bag. I usually use it for 2 or 3 minutes. I much prefer to do it for a time frame, and HATE it when people say jump 200 times, because counting during skipping drives me crazy.

Sohan, just out of curiousity what is your skipping routine? several rounds with breaks, or one continuous period.

I've been doing 15 minutes continuous (more or less anyway, the occasional trip always happens) trying to go balls out every now and then.

Typically 3-5 rounds of 3 minutes duration, with 30 seconds to 1 minute between, depends on available time. I recover pretty well from this. Since I run intervals 3 times per week and do a couple more recovery runs, I really don't need to more than that, but it's a great compliment to my running.

I've never been an expert like Buddy Lee, but I do my best. This is the genius of skipping:

Great idea about the jumping rope. As a new karateka, and an out of shape 39yr old, I've been wanting to get my lungs in better shape, thought about taking up jogging but maybe I'll give the jump rope a try to start things off. :P
