bushido_man96 Posted September 18, 2006 Posted September 18, 2006 Ok so what about this? If you don't learn jump kicks or flying kicks in your dojo (which i mentioned earlier we don't). It's something i have always wanted to learn. If you have lots of martial arts experience already, do you guys think you could learn them properly from a book or DVD?With your experience in the martial arts, and having good basic technique, you could probably learn some jumping kicks from books and videos. It will be a good idea to get some feedback from someone who might be able to watch the video demo, and then watch you, and tell you what you might need to do to look more like the video. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
jaymac Posted September 18, 2006 Posted September 18, 2006 You aren't trying to learn a whole style from a video, so sure, i think you could learn jump kicks from that source. Do they have that type of video that only teaches jump kicks? A great martial artist is one who is humble and respectful of others.
Shotokan-kez Posted September 18, 2006 Posted September 18, 2006 I doubt it jaymac, but i suscribe to traditional karate magazine and in septembers issue there was a section in it showing how to do certain one's. I could try doing a search. Walk away and your always a winner. https://www.shikata-shotokan.co.uk
The Karate Kid Posted September 18, 2006 Posted September 18, 2006 you cant beat learning them from an instructor though and its my strong belief that they shuld be in the garding syllabus espescially for balck belt gradings!!!!!! "When I punch, I do not hit, it hits all by itself."Bruce Lee

patusai Posted September 18, 2006 Posted September 18, 2006 There are a lot of comments about the effectiveness of jump kicks. You can gain a lot power through the momentum of these kicks. They can be useful in sparring, depending on the style of sparring that you do. Are they effective on the streets? I think not likely, but someone else may have used one with success in the streets. My question is this: Do you like to do them, if not just for fun? I like them because they are challenging and provide a good workout.I liked them for run and because it challenged a workout since, most of the ones I learned came near the end of the kata. In my old age, I am finding that with my knees being what they are they are not as enjoyable but I do still see benefit in them if, for nothing else, to remind me of who I am and what I can realistically do. Rick_72 Posted September 18, 2006 Posted September 18, 2006 I'm sure there are situations where you "could" use jump kicks, but why would anyone want to. One, a kick from a solid stance, that you can turn your hips into, is going to be faster and more powerful. Two, there so many things that can go wrong, in kumite or a real fight when you leave your feet.
