Shotokan-kez Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 I'm about to go on my 2nd brown belt course. Just wondering if any of you guys have them and weather they are compulsary and what normally happens. In our club it's compulsary to take at least 3 and one of them has to be on 1st kyu before a black belt grading. Our courses last two hours with an hours class before hand. We mainly concentrate on one or two kata's and bunkai and maybe some kumite. I am really looking forward to sunday! Walk away and your always a winner. https://www.shikata-shotokan.co.uk
Shui Tora Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 Lucky you! You'll be higher than me! I'll be taking my 2nd Kyu in October! We've been going through some stuff at the Dojo. We will do certain kicks for the grade (like Kakato Geri for 2nd, and knife defence as well); we also went through some Bunkai for Nihanchi and Bassai Dai...We are introducing Ippon Kumite to be included for 4th Kyu and above... I like it! Makes you think on your feet! "Be creative" is what my sensei asks!Go break a leg! Nice loud Kiai's as well... Shotokan-kez Posted September 7, 2006 Author Posted September 7, 2006 I think you misunderstand me hun. I am already 1st kyu. I was talking about brown belt course's, not gradings (or did you know that already and its just me being dumb) Walk away and your always a winner. https://www.shikata-shotokan.co.uk
Shui Tora Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 Whoops! I thought that you were going in for your grading! Oh dear! I misunderstood! My bad! Well; you have some insight into our gradings... Are you with thw JKA system? alsey Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 i did three as well before grading for shodan. one of them i'll never forget, they had this japanese guy (i totally forget his name) and he said like two english words throughout the whole thing. if someone didn't get something, he'd just shout it louder in japanese. he was great though, one of the most motivational guys i've ever had lead a class. most of my courses were spent doing bassai dai, making sure we had all the subtle bits of it right, but we did quite a lot of kumite as well. alsey Posted September 8, 2006 Posted September 8, 2006 they're like seminars, but especially for brown belts to get them ready for shodan.
