Pinan Shodan = Heian Shodan (close enough)

Typically Pinan Shodan is the Heian Nidan of shotokan for the most part anyway.

Isn't Pinan Shodan one of the early katas? I read a book on the applied bunkai applications for this kata, and the other Pinan/Heian katas. Very cool stuff.

Yeah the bunkai is very cool

Pian Shodan? Which one. Some schools will use what others call Pian Ni Dan as Shodan. At this time I can't explain it well but it goes something like one being easier than the other but because of a respect issue.

the one with hammer fist is Pinan Nidan as Itosu named it, later in Japan they changed it to Heian Shodan since it was easer to start with. I have seen some shito ryu based dojos also swap the names between Pinan Shodan and Pinan Nidan.

so does anyone know why pinan shodan/heian nidan was originally the first kata? its considerably more complicated than pinan nidan/heian shodan. its something i've never quite understood.
