cathal Posted August 22, 2006 Posted August 22, 2006 Subject line says it all, doesn't it? I was sparring with a fellow last night and we were standing mirror image (for those that don't know this is when both you and your opponent have opposite legs forward; e.g. his right, myleft) as we were free sparring. We both moved in for a kick with our rear legs. He was executing a jodan level roundhouse kick...and for me a forward snap kick.So I had my knee up, and was about to snap out when I saw his leg come up, much faster than me. So I tightened my leg and raised it up a bit to do a leg block, and made contact with his leg just above his knee. This had the effect of deflecting the roundhouse. However when that happened my leg kicked out, and the top of my foot struck his shin! So I hit the floor and I fell of course. I got the spent the next 10 minutes with ice on my foot, enjoying endorphines and adrenaline. I'm told this would not have happend if I had remaind "on target" and not been scared of being bowled over by our mutual charge. Because,in the end, we were both able to stop ourselves from doing just that.I'm just a bit store today. But I have learned a few things:1. RELAX2. Stay on target, even if you're nervous.3. First Aid Kits are surprisingly useful. .The best victory is when the opponent surrendersof its own accord before there are any actualhostilities...It is best to win without fighting.- Sun-tzu
Azmyth Posted August 22, 2006 Posted August 22, 2006 That bites. I remember when I almost gave up TKD when my instructor nailed me dead in the face on accident and my nose was all swelled up and bled like crazy. He was cool about it though, and let me kind rough him up a bit to make up for it. (sparred him without any padding on his part). He really made sure I wasn't scared by it, and after putting a popcicle on my nose I actually stayed for the next 2 sparring classes after it as well. "Fear does not exist in this dojo does it?"
parkerlineage Posted August 22, 2006 Posted August 22, 2006 Man, I'm sorry that happened. Any permanent or longer than temporary damage done?Simultaneous kicks almost always = bad news. American Kenpo Karate- First Degree Black Belt"He who hesitates, meditates in a horizontal position."Ed Parker
alsey Posted August 22, 2006 Posted August 22, 2006 ouch, is your foot ok now? and i agree with parkerlineage, bad things tend to happen when kicks are thrown simultaneously. "Gently return to the simple physical sensation of the breath. Then do it again, and again, and again. Somewhere in this process, you will come face-to-face with the sudden and shocking realization that you are completely crazy. Your mind is a shrieking, gibbering madhouse on wheels." - ven. henepola gunaratana
koko1969 Posted August 22, 2006 Posted August 22, 2006 2. Stay on target, even if you're nervous. For me, that's easier said than done. Hope you feel better.
Shotokan-kez Posted August 22, 2006 Posted August 22, 2006 That sucks, hope your leg is feeling better soon! Walk away and your always a winner. https://www.shikata-shotokan.co.uk
Zorbasan Posted August 22, 2006 Posted August 22, 2006 damn that sucks. you'll be ok thoand as sempai says, train hard, you will get hurt. but it prepares you cos in a real fight, you will get hurt. Now you use head for something other than target.

cathal Posted August 23, 2006 Author Posted August 23, 2006 Thank you everyone. It's great to feel loved. The foot does feel much better. Painkillers and walking a bit have improved the feeling, I can't put all my weight on it right now but I can walk just fine. I'll be fine in a week or so I think. .The best victory is when the opponent surrendersof its own accord before there are any actualhostilities...It is best to win without fighting.- Sun-tzu
Jiffy Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 Not all bad news. At least it was fairly minor, and most of all, you've learned some very valuable lessons from it. The mind is like a parachute, it only works when it's open.
