matt_t2004
Hey guys I am new to the martial arts world and need some help. You see I am an attractive 20 year old male ( not being cocky honest) with long blonde hair. I live in a little country town, and everywhere I go people seem to want to start something with me. I am about 185 lbs and am 6'1 so I am no weekling by any means. I workout all the time and love anything physically demanding. I have avoided fights so far, but the other night a couple of guys were talking about my girlfriend and me badly I did not run like a baby , but did leave. I feel helpless sometimes ( I guess it comes form being picked on as a kid). I live 45 min. from the nearest city (which has several martial arts facilites). I am just wondering which is the best to for a stree fight. I am not looking to start a fight , but when the time comes want to know what to do. My choices are Karate, TKD, Boxing, Brizilian Jiu Jitsu, or Muay Tia( at a local gym). Which would be best. I would like to know in your opinions which is best before I drive 45 minutes to one that will not work in real life situation. Thanks a lot. bushido_man96
To be honest with you, it will depend on how you train more than the style. Also important will be the methods of instruction. Your best bet is to try to sit down and watch a class of each, and see which one fits the bill for you. You may also consider taking a couple of the styles, like boxing for standup, and BJJ for grappling. Just a thought.By the way, welcome to KF! https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
Jiffy
As Bushido_Man mentioned, it depends more on the school than the style. This same question gets asked by a newbie probably about twice a week, so the question you are asking is normal. Best bet would to spend some time on this website. Do some searching and read up a little about the different styles. Perhaps look in the new members section and see what suggestions have been given to checking out a new school. Once you have narrrowed it down, time to go for that drive.Good Luck The mind is like a parachute, it only works when it's open.
P.A.L
since you got a situation and need a direct answer i get to the point for you quickly1- thai boxing2- Boxingwithin 2 years you can take care of yourself effectively. i look at it as art and there is no end to it, i'll have my whole life to perfect my art and i am in no rush, when you look at it inthis way then the teacher becomes very important and you gotta find the right one. my current teacher is my 5th one in Okinawan karate and i finally found the right one. Shotokan-kez
I think with all arts you can always defend yourself in the street in a real life situation, but i agree with the rest of the advice it's down to the teaching of the style and you of course, which ever style suits you best will be the one that helps you out on the streets should the situation occur.Welcome to KF Walk away and your always a winner. https://www.shikata-shotokan.co.uk
alsey
check them all out and talk to the instructors, see what type of training is done. i think either boxing, muay thai or brazillian jiu jitsu will suit your needs because those arts usually involve training against a fully resisting opponent. but most importantly make sure you want to learn from that particular instructor.its good that you left the other night, you should always walk away if you can. fighting isn't pretty and should be a last resort. "Gently return to the simple physical sensation of the breath. Then do it again, and again, and again. Somewhere in this process, you will come face-to-face with the sudden and shocking realization that you are completely crazy. Your mind is a shrieking, gibbering madhouse on wheels." - ven. henepola gunaratana
mya
In theory you should train bouth Muthay and Brazilian Jujitso. But check the Muthay school out, it could be awfull and then boxing would benefit you.In practice, you should buy a gun and learn to ignore them. But the training might prove a lot more enjoiable than just buying a gun.Especialy Jujitso. Jujitso sparing must be rush.

Scotty
Looking at that list I recommend muay tai. But of course you've always got to bear in mind that it's not just about winning fights. As my martial arts teacher says "Anyone on the street can punch and kick, what we teach is how to DEFEND yourself while doing this" The best armour is to keep out of range. RichardHangHong
I agree with the others. Go and watch some of the classes first to see which one(s) you prefer, have a chat with the instructors and let them know why you want to start training and see which one you're most comfortable with and start from there.
