karate dojos usually have smooth wooden floors. if you wear socks you're gonna slip over. you can grip the floor a lot better without socks. plus, in all honesty, you look a bit stupid in a gi and socks.

Makes sense but I have been in dojos with carpetting and you still had to take off your socks. There must be another reason.

people of japan and Okinawa don't use socks like others who live inland, you can see this in most cities on a coast line. so it's is imported custom that we follow.

I know of a school where some of the weiners wear socks while they train. It's also important to build up callouses on the bottoms of your feet and if you actually train hard you will rip up socks fairly quick.

A friend of I teach martial arts at this school part time and he teaches BJJ, the students can't do certain things properly while wearing socks. The same goes when I teach Muay Thai to them. They can't pivot, I had enough and made them start taking there socks off.

First, socks smell, and they smell a lot.

Feet smell and some feet smell worse than the socks. :kaioken:

But you can wash your feet before you practice, while washing your socks... is just strange.

Then, you have the fact that socks cut a bit of your sensivity of the floor. And they grip the floor is a strange sense.

They can slip on hard wood, and grip to mutch on some mats.

And a sweaty feet in a wet sock just completely sucks.

So wash you feet and learn to train barefooted. :brow:

PS: if you have feet sickness please do us a favor and wear socks.

:o I couldn't imagine wearing my socks while training, it would be so strange. Your answers are already there i guess. Firstly you would slip on the floors, if your training in socks on a carpet you would like rub your feet and make them sore..and like someone else said..they stink!

Training without socks toughens your feet. And, you have better grip, like the others have said.

Also, when everyone trains barefoot, it ensures that nothing will be drug onto the workout floor with socks or shoes. Keeps it clean and safer.
