Just curious, my daughter is asking for a gaming unit such as PS2, X box and such (the PS3 seems nice but it cost far too much). She is 13 years old. What would be a good game unit?

The PS3 does cost too much...(a big downfall...)

The PS2 is good for graphics (though rivilary with the XBox isn't helping it!)

I suggest that you get the PS2... there are loads of games about that are really good (Final Fantasy X being one of them... :D) and as it is out for some time, you can pick them up for a good price... However, it depends on the amount of money you want to spend...

Nintendo Wii (coming out in the fall) - Innovative motion sensing controller, ability to play all gamecube games, ability to download and play classic nintendo games, designed to be simple for non-gamers. Will be cheaper than PS3 or XBOX 360. Graphics will be better than XBOX but worse than XBOX 360

PS3 (coming out in the fall) - Will be extremely expensive, not sure if it would be worth it over XBOX 360 (time will tell). Probably slightly better graphics than XBOX 360, will play Blu Ray movies.

XBOX 360 - Best graphics right now, good for sports, action, western RPG (ie Oblivion), racing. New and fairly expensive.

XBOX - Very good graphics, big library, probably the best for action, sports, western RPG, some fun fighters

Gamecube - graphics not quite up to XBOX level, but better than PS2's graphics. Good for Nintendo first party stuff with lots of critically acclaimed games, some Japanese RPGs, very good for party games and family friendly games (Monkey Ball, Smash Brothers, Mario Party, etc) Very cheap.

PS2 - Least impressive graphics of the bunch. (and oldest system still on sale) Best for japanese RPGs and tournament fighters. Lots of people like it for sports as well. Biggest library of games, so there are tons of bad games and tons of good games, just have to pick the right ones. Lots of quirky games like Katamari Damacy. Probably the best for platformers. Worst for shooters due to weak graphics and controller. Quite cheap as well.

X Box seems to aim at the older crowd with more mature games. Nintendo is the younger crowd & it has more "signature" games that the other consoles don't have. PS2 is in the middle.

My 14 y.o daughter would pick the gamecube.

I've got serious doubts about the PS3 coming out for Christmas let alone for this fall.

I think that the PS3 is going to be a big let down... The XBox 360 took most of the "punters" away from Sony, and don't forget that the Nintendo Wii is coming out too...

There is serious competition now, and i think that the Ps3 isn't going to handle it... Sony made the cut when they released the PS2, but now, after releasing the PSP, i just think its time for them to try something new out... I think they've lost race...

I say get the PSII. Another nice thing is that the PSII can play PS1 games. Those are great games and can be bought for under ten dollars at chain retail stores.

You also need to hit half.com (which is run by eBay) to buy PS1&2 games. They are mega cheap.

Ps2 is fab, i recommend you get that, the price for it has come right down now. Although the X Box if fab too it's dearer. I would love an X Box but can't afford it. Like someone else mentioned there are loads and loads of games available on the ps2, with an easy choice of suitable one's for your daughter. Have a look on ebay, you may be able to get a good deal on there.

Just be prepared for her eyes to be glued on the games and her developing selective hearing when 'mum' shouts her! Lol
