sui-fuw Posted April 30, 2002 Posted April 30, 2002 sorry i forgot.if you pay more for a dan does it make you a better karate guy or are you paying for the emperors new clothes???
tessone Posted April 30, 2002 Posted April 30, 2002 For the record, dan testing in KSW is $300 for 1st dan (or $350, I forget), $500 for 2nd dan, and $700 for 3rd. Master (5th dan) is something like $1500. Just because a testing is expensive doesn't mean you're dealing with a McDojo. At least in our organization, becoming an advanced student (a black belt) means you have the right to teach, which is a big deal, and it also means you have to help build up the organization. So especially in a smaller art, expensive promotions aren't so odd. The way I look at it is, I'm already getting a lot from KSW as it is. By then, it's about time to pay back the art for what it's given me. Chris TessoneBrown Belt, Kuk Sool Won
Hapkido-Cougar Posted May 26, 2002 Posted May 26, 2002 Usually.. Hapkido and Aikido and I think Kenpo, maybe. Hapkido cost $140.00 and aikido is $100.00. Im not too sure about kenpo, but i heard kenpo training is like $99 something like that. the cheap one is Tae kwon do. Tae kwon do is like $30 something like that! or $40! Withers M.A.A. Posted May 27, 2002 Posted May 27, 2002 I had to pay $200 for mine when I tested. Kind of a rip off but I guess you have no choice... Pete 2nd Degree black belt in Kenpo Karate and Tae Kwon Do. 1997 NASKA competitor-2nd place Nationally in Blackbelt American Forms. Firearms activist!
tessone Posted May 27, 2002 Posted May 27, 2002 I'm not so convinced it's a rip-off. Think about all the things your organization has to pay for on the very small percentage they get from testing fees (a bit higher for black belt) and your yearly dues. Those bills can get pretty expensive, especially when you're supporting thousands (sometimes millions) of students with literature, gear, seminars, etc. Chris TessoneBrown Belt, Kuk Sool Won
Bitseach Posted May 27, 2002 Posted May 27, 2002 Good Lord! At my old dojo you graded for something like £10 to cover admin costs and the Sensei would buy you your belt as a "well done" present! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~My karma will run over your dogma~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ckdstudent Posted May 27, 2002 Posted May 27, 2002 I suppose the high price also helps to narrow it down to those who are truly dedicated to the art, and instructors need to eat as much as anyone else. ---------Pil SungJimmy B
