crash
when I first started my goal was to reach blackbelt, (as I'm sure everyones is). and it gave me something to strive for, something to keep practicing harder and harder for. once I reached it,( 3 years later) I realized I didnt need a piece of cloth to keep me going, I was going to continue for me, not for something that was tied around my waist, so I havent tested since receiveing my first blackbelt. does that meen I havent learned anything in the last 12 years?, no..it just meens I continue for myself, not for reward....I think that sometimes the testing for stripes is there as a goal for blackbelts just as higher belts are the goal for beginners. somtimes ppl need something to strive for, something to keep them interested. does that make sense?. plus its a good way for dojo's to continue test fees for ppl who have reached there blackbelt program. KickChick
Our school and the ITU organization requires gold stripes on our black belt to designate dan ranks.... and its a good thing because we are a "Black Belt " school.... which basically means a good number of our black belt students have remained to continue their training .... hence we have a separate black belt (advanced) classes with a large number of bb's in attendance. And the "good thing" is the instructor would know how to split this class up on forms night. Also we line up at the beginning of class according to rank ... with 15 or more black belts it would be rather confusing!! So my black belt is embroidered with two gold horizontal stripes on the left and my name in Korean letters (Hangul) on the right. I have heard of black belts having "tips" which I am not familiar with and maybe someone can shed light on these.
kchenault
We use stripes at our school, but the owners (head instructors) have recently received from Grandmaster Jung, belts with red stripes instead of gold stripes. I don't know exactly why they are a different color, but they sure look awesome. I can't wait to receive my first dan and the gold stripe that goes with it. I have seen this practice since I was a kid back in the 70's. Ken ChenaultTFT - It does a body good!
Mr.Man
I don't know anyone who doesn't think it's cool to get their next belt. Even 2nd, 3rd dan BB. There is nothing wrong with being proud of your accomplishments. If you truly feel that it is not necessary, not humble or just stupid to wear the stripes then you wouldn't wear the BB either. You would just wear the white belt and show people what they need to know about you.
kchenault
Good point Mr.Man. Why wear a uniform? Why not just workout clothes? Ken ChenaultTFT - It does a body good!
ninjanurse
KickChick, We had "Tips" for Shodans for a while but it didn't last. You got one for each 2nd degree pretest you passed (usually one every 3 months) and when you collected them all you were eligible to test. It helped break the class down for curriculum work but didn't light anybody's fire. Pacificshore
Dosen't really matter how many stripes one has on their BB, what matters is how they carry themselves. Anyone could have all the stripes in the world or none, and can either be a egomaniac about it or not. In my style, we wear a BB with our name on one end and our style on the other. As far degree of BB in our system, well you gotta ask if you don't know, and that's usually only to pay proper respects to each other. So there's no way of telling who's 2nd, 3rd, and so on. Rhuarc
Hi KickChick, The only tips I know are those regarding colour belts. For example: 1. White 2. Yellow Tip 3. Yellow 4. Green Tip 5. Green 6. Blue Tip 7. Blue 8. Brown Tip 9. Brown 10 Black Tip 11. 1st Dan Black So if you are a brown tip, the belt you wear is blue in colour. However, you attach brown tape at the 2 ends of your blue belt. This is how it is done in Singapore at least and for WTF. Hope that answers your question.
hangooksahlam
Hi first post At our school, we use stripes to designate what dan you are: 1dan yellow, 2nd green, 3rd blue, 4th red... You also get a uniform with trim on the ends of the sleeves that matches your belt. Its sort of our "dress" uniform, worn during tests,bb classes, and when you're teaching. Most bb's have a separate regular uniform for normal use. g 2nd Dan Tae Kwon Do
SandanPJ
I have a blackbelt with stripes and one without. For my training and teaching I wear my old black belt. But at functions I will wear my striped belt.
