If You Created Your Own Martial Art Style....

Featured Replies

Does it need a name? I'd probably just call it Jones Family Martial Arts. If it was my system...that only makes sence. I am a Jones, and it would be the MA my family line created. What would you calls yours Sohan?

Well, unfortunately my last name doesn't go well as the name of a style. Doesn't roll off the tongue like Uechi-ryu. But style names usually reflect not only the martial way of the founder but the culture and geography that that founder is a part of. So the name would have to be in English, first of all.

I would want a martial art that represents peace and unity over war, a style that is not overly dogmatic yet represents the fundamentals of successful proven fighting skills for my geographical area and the physical dimensions of those like me who would practice it.

So considering all that, I suppose an appropriate name could be, "The Southeastern U.S.A. Martial Way of the Peaceful Fist".

Hmm. Guess that shows that some of us Americans don't have quite the system-naming talent that the Asians have?

My last name doesn't go well with mine either.

It is called either Shogerijutsu Naibu Karate Do, or just Shogerijutsu Karate Do, or Shonaibudo Karate Do.

Sho meaning essence or essential

geri meaning kick, implying leg strikes

jujutsu meaning technique

Naibu meaning internal

Do meaning way

It is a mixed martial art, combative in nature, and of which utilizes both internal and external principles.

It is a family Martial Art first and foremost.

Later!

Good question. I don't have a good name to place in front of a dojo name. I think I would want something like "heart of warrior" translated to japanese. That might be cool. Glad I am not making up my own style though.

A great martial artist is one who is humble and respectful of others.

Jaymac, I'm thinking that would be "kokoro no senshi", translating it to Japanese. But I could be wrong. :)

Well I did found my own. Originally I called it Tai Shin Jitsu which was a solely ju jitsu system but did not include the otherside of my training which is in traditional japanese / okinawan karate. So this year when I split from my instructor I took the ciriculum I had laid out for him and added more to it and renamed Tai Shin Jitsu to Seijitsu Shin Do (Way of the faithful heart). The system has different style aspects to it also.

Seijitsu Shin Ryu Ju Jutsu - solid ju jutsu

Seijitsu Shin Ryu Karate - Solid Japanese style karate

Seijitsu Shin Ryu Kobudo - which is a complete weapons cirriculum that includes the Bo, Nunchaku, Tonfa, Kama, Sai, Nunti Bo and Eaku

A combination of the above systems make up Seijitsu Shin Do

i am pretty sure if we go to one of these sokeship websites thay can pickup a very nice name for us as long as we pay our dues. :)

I'd call it "supreme deathfist ultimo heartstrike"

I would mix styles, but I wouldn't call it something it's not. I would give credit where credit is dew. Like if I openned a TKD school and added jujitsu, I'd say this came from Jujitsu. I wouldn't give it (both styles combined) a new name and say this is it. It's not. I'm sure all styles were new at one time, but it's just not me to do that.
