Jp656
This realy sucks, Listen, My karate instructer says i gotta get my hair cut because my hair is in my eyes when i sparr, and i hate getting my hair cut, Its screws up my whole life i hate it! I bought a bandana and put it on under my headgear, Then i was sparring and it was staying in place perfectly, He thought that my hair was cut, then the next day i come in with it on, and he tells me to take it off and sees my hair still long and spazzes out, I told him how i was wearing it the day before in sparring and how it stayed perfect, But this went to that, and of course i ended up getting a hair cut, I gave pictures to the person i wanted to cut it and explained every detailI come out baldBarbers suck,All my life they screw things up and i pay for it, Anyway, Is it fair to have to get my hair cut even though i can keep it in place perfectly with a bandana? Just saying, For next time..Is it fair? Yeah yeah, Shut up already Begginer-2nd degree white
DJmma
I really dont think your instructor has anything to do with your personal life...i mean why should he decide if you should get a hair cut, its almost like he's your mom. Even if it was effecting your ability to see, its your choice wheather you want to change that.
Whitefeather
In your situation, I would just have a non-volatile one-on-one talk with your instructor. If you can rationally discuss the hair thing with him, and you and him can come to a good rational decision, then it was probably just a misunderstanding. My guess is that he thought that you were trying to decieve him or something, so he naturally got a bit flustered, thus putting forth the "You must cut your hair" edict. If, when you talk to him, he remains angry at you and is not able to have a rational discussion, then I would reccomend looking into finding a different dojo.David "Between genius and insanity, there lies a fine line. CheekyMusician
I agree. Its OK for you instructor to suggest you get a haircut, but I don't think he should make it mandatory. Fair enough, if you were risking serious injury to yourself or others because of a factor of your appearance, such as if you were a girl with really long nails or something, then I could see his point forcing you to make changes, but you hair? However, clearly your instructor wants you to do well and succeed in karate and he clearly thought that your hairstyle was maybe holding you back from performing at your best, and so you should be glad of that. You've cut your hair now, so that's it done and you may as well forget about it now, I suppose, and just be glad you have an instructor who wants to make sure you achieve your potential. Smile. It makes people wonder what you've been up to.

I to beleieve he was thinking of what in your best interest. If you respect him enough it should'nt be hard to comply, but on the other hand, you dont have to worry about it again for a couple months..when your hair grows back.... ArmorOfGod
Actually, I agree with the instructor. When you step in his class, you have to go by his rules. If you don't like it, find another school. Now, for a personal opinion: years back when I was competing, there were a few schools where their students wore bandanas while competing. I find it disprespectful to wear a hat or bandana during forms. I don't mind it during sparring, but it still makes everyone who wears them look like thugs and punks.Just my personal opinion. Don't take it too personally.AoG
MartialArthur
ArmorofGod is exactly right. The instructor can choose who he wants to provide services for, and he has the right to deny his services to anyone. It might not be fair, or even a smart business move, but he has that right. Of course you have the right to take your business elsewhere. This is an example of "it's a free country"...
patusai
ArmorOfGod said it well. It's not your school. As for barbers...you've got to find a good one. If you went to one of those "styling" places you, first of all spent too much money and secondly a registered barber is the best way to go in my opinion. If they wash the hair and then cut it that will indeed screw things up. Washing long hair and cutting it at the length that you desire is fine but when it drys the hair is actually shorter then intended. In my day I had long hair (long and naturally wavy) and the hair wash always screwed up the length for me after the hair dried. A genuine barber next time...ask for his certificate.
