patusai Posted March 5, 2006 Posted March 5, 2006 Personally I like a little what it called So Ryu "Don't tell me the sky's the limit because I have seen footprints on the moon!" -- Paul Brandt
italian_guy Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 Go Ju ryu is my favorite. It is mostly striking but with some grappling (let's say 30%), external with some internals (ki kung katas Sanchin and Tensho),it has the right mixture of ingredients for me.I know Shotokan because of my son doing it but I prefer GoJu.

I imagine others work better for certain body types too. Now I need to find a style that specifically adapts to and old and fat man's body...unless I can get off this computer and actually do some real exercise. Slowing down on food intake wouldn't hurt me either! "Don't tell me the sky's the limit because I have seen footprints on the moon!" -- Paul Brandt
shotokanbeginner Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 I like shotokan, kyokushin, and shito ryu, but that is only becuase I don't know much about the other styles. everyone has fear, but it is when we let it overcome us that we losesoft, hard, slow, fast components of kata

From what I know up to now I didn't notice this, if there is somebody who is 'old and fat' as you said and want to start karate he needs to talk to the instructor and get a special training program... and in parallel start a diet! (you cannot become younger but you can become thinnier).
A. Orstrom Posted March 13, 2006 Posted March 13, 2006 I have only tried Shotokan and Kyokushinkai, but I prefer the latter. Both great styles though. The happiness of a man in this life does not consist in the absence, but in the mastery of his passions.Alfred, Lord Tennyson
younwhadoug Posted March 13, 2006 Posted March 13, 2006 youn wha ryu, its all i've done and am a beginner at that be polite, be patient, be alert, be brave, do your best, respect yourself and others. "you may knock me down 100 times but i am resilliant and will NEVER GIVE UP"
alsey Posted July 23, 2006 Posted July 23, 2006 shotokan is the only style i've studied properly. i don't like the way karate is taught these days though. i guess my favorite styles are the old okinawan ones where combat was still the main reason for karate. i attended a ryukyu kempo seminar once, it was brilliant.
