dotc
I started kickboxing about 3 months ago and was really enjoying it. The other night, training with a partner on focus mitts, I broke my wrist (scaphoid bone). I really want to continue with KB once it heals (2-6 months if I am lucky ), but it scared me how easily I got injured. Are my wrists just too weak to handle hard punching, or was this just bad luck? Has anyone here come back after a scaphoid break?I was training with wrapped hands, but no gloves. Would a pair of bag gloves have saved me?Any advise is appreciated.bummed,Dotc
KF Dude
The scaphoid has weak blood flow so it's going to take a long time to heal. Baby that wrist until your doc gives you the o.k. to start moving it again. Bag gloves might have helped cusion the impact but I think it probably was improper technique combined with weak wrists. Strengthen the hand & forearm muscles to support the wrist. Have your instructor take a look at how you are making contact with the focus mitt.I wish you a speedy recovery, training injuries can be frustrating. Meguro
From what little I know of this injury, it is quite serious. The scaphoid bone, since it's nested inside the wrist is very hard to break. When it does break, it's usually do to a major traumatic event-car crashes for example. Hard to believe you got this kind of break from focus mitts.Good luck with your recovery. Before you start hitting things again, strangthen your hand and forearm muscles. Do knuckle push-ups. Get a gripper or squeeze ball. Go slow. dotc
Thanks for the advise. I went in today for a second set of x-ray and good news! Turns out it was not broken after all, just a bad sprain. I still won't be training for a while, but at least I don't have to wear a cast for months or give up kickboxing permanently. No more sloppy jabs for me!Cheers, dotc. It takes time to heal. He was out about 3 months, and is working "easily" until it's fully healed. My suggestion to you is to listen to your doctor, AND your body. Don't push it, and try too hard. Give your body time to heal it's not worth it, even though its not broken, give it time.
dragons_wrath99
Hey, just want you to know that I'm sorry about your wrist. Once you get better, though, I know an amazing tool that will help your wrist get stronger again- it's called a Dyna-Flex PowerBall. It works really, really well. You can go to http://www.dynaflex-intl.com/ to learn more about it- I'm pretty sure you want the Gyro Exercisers. I hope you get better soon and I hope I helped! KaRaTe_KiD456
Ouch, that stuff happens a lot at my dojo, most of the incidents were due to poor technique, but it could just be a weak wrist. "The mind is a powerful weapon"
